This past July (2012), my son and (now) daughter-in-law were married in Whitefish, Montana. After scouring the usual websites, I came upon the Good Medicine Lodge as an alternative for a multi-night stay for friends and family members who were planning to come to the event from the east coast. I wanted something central, yet quiet, with a full breakfast with which to start the day. I also hoped to find a property that could be occupied solely by our group. Good Medicine Lodge was the perfect solution. Betsy and Woody Cox, the owner/managers of GML, were incredibly helpful, often able to anticipate my concerns before I even raised them. The place is gorgeous - tasteful, clean, elegant and spacious. The public areas are very welcoming and warm and Betsy and Woody have the ability to line the walls and shelves with beautiful artwork, including vintage egg cups and pitchers in the dining room. Our group did take over the entire lodge and the Coxes furnished us with our own refrigerator space, more than adequate glassware, dishes and utensils for our ad hoc gatherings. They also serve wine and delicious snacks in the late afternoon. And, the glass canisters are always filled with home-baked cookies. Everything is baked using Betsy's recipes and the breakfast choices were amazing. It turns out that my son and daughter-in-law are moving to New York City in a few weeks, so I may not be in Whitefish again very soon. I am grateful that if it was to be my only experience in this part of Montana, I had one that will always be on the top of my list of the most memorable moments of my life. Sure, the wedding was the key event, but staying at Good Medicine Lodge made it all so special.

Room Tip: The Great Northern Suite is the best, but bear in mind that the sitting area is lofted over the Livi...

Our flight arrived early in the afternoon so we were a little early for check-in, but that wasn't a problem. We were made to feel very welcome by Betsy and then later met Woody who was an absolute fountain of knowledge. We had no specific ideas about the best places to see during the three days we stayed, but Woody's advice meant that we made the most of our time. And saved us from having to purchase a can of bear spray! Glacier National Park was amazing, though it pays to get on the road early in the day. Our room was so very comfortable, clean and quiet, lovely bathroom, great having a private deck to relax on in the evening. Having laundry facilities was really helpful too. Breakfast was as everyone has said - fantastic. We were intrigued with the "butter bell" on our table, so much in fact that we purchased one to bring home. Had dinner at McGarrys Roadhouse which is directly opposite, we were pretty tired after a big day, so it was nice to just wander across the road. If we were lucky enough to be in Whitefish again, would definitely stay again.

We spent three days at the Good Medicine Lodge in Whitefish, MT. It was the perfect balance of being on your own and enjoying the hospitality of the proprietors who worked to make sure you enjoyed your stay. The gathering room is set up with a help yourself approach, but the hosts were always nearby if you needed anything. I can't say enough the creative homemade breakfasts that Betsy puts together and the most incredible cookies which were always there for your enjoyment. Clean and pleasant rooms. Easy access to Whitefish (not walking distance but a quick drive) which is a great town to find some unique treasures, and the restraurants in town provided some great evening dinner choices. Hot tub available, evening wine and cheese or some other treats. Woody is a great resource for local area options. Highly recommend especially if no young children.

From the glass of wine and appetizers waiting for you on arrival to having to fight the temptation to take one more homemade cookie to sumptuous breakfasts and a great host, you will love the Great Medicine Lodge. Going over to Glacier for a hike? Woody will show you the short cuts and give you a can of bear spray (well, you never know ...). Want to dine in town? First take a look at all of the restaurant menus in the living room. Leaving before breakfast? They'll fix you up with "to go" cartons.

This was our 1st trip to Whitefish, we stayed for 3 nights over Thanksgiving weekend for our 29th anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed the accommodations and the hospitality. We chose it based on TripAdvisor reviews and were not disappointed. The lodge is very spacious, the rooms inviting and the hot tub was a welcome perk after an afternoon of hiking as was the complimentary wine and beer at " happy hour". We were really made to feel welcome and at home. Breakfast was a highlight of our stay, always delicious and served with a smile in the spacious but cozy breakfast room. We also really appreciated the dinner suggestions and the availability of many local restraurant menus to peruse. We look forward to visiting again.

When you walk into the front door you are met by some of the most beautiful wood pieces you can imagine. Then in walks Woody with a big smile and welcomes you as if you are old friends. There is a long bar area where you sign in and it is hard to concentrate on your car license with three large glass cookie jars stacked to the top with the biggest cookies you have every seen. Unfortunately they taste just as good as they look so be sure to do lots of walking. The whole place is airy and light with lots of places to sit and read or talk to other guests. Woody is always around to insure you have everything you need. At 5 out comes the wine, beer and other goodies. There is always a coffee machine waiting and I got the hang of the fine art of pressed coffee. The bed and linens are top quality just as everything else. And breakfast well lets just say that when your hostess has her own cookbook that is for sale throughout the Glacier Area it must be good! Thanks Woody and Betsy it was great.

It is hard to say all that my husband and I could say that has not been said already... Summary.. If you are headed for the Glacier National Park area and Whitefish is near your route, than detour to make a stop over. Great rooms, special amenities and awesome breakfast options make this Bed and Breakfast a must. The rooms are well appointed, coffee and homemade cookies area available 24/7 for those early journeys into the park, close by ski area or sunrise at a local lake. Wine and appetizers are available in early evening. Woody and Betsy are both gracious and knowledgeable of the area. Restaurants are nearby and diverse. If you are fortunate, a deer or two may watch you having breakfast through one of the many windows in the breakfast room. We will be back as it is a nice compliment to a beautiful part of the Montana.
