Just walk up the street (past the construction) to have your latte, Montana style, and one of their good muffins. Ease into the West. Immediately met a couple of locals and their cool dog and felt welcome.

OK, so this is not Starbucks, but - it is how coffee is done Montana style. There is plenty of seating for conversation, WiFi for surfing and the decor is rustic Montana-meets-coffee-house style. Very appealing.

We had the raspberry-peach pie which was extremely good. The coffee is good and the customer service of the staff make you feel like an 'old-timer' from next door.

Iced decaf soy mocha was good for a non-Starbucks. Lots of people working, but mostly chatty in unorganized way. Cafe is just great if you are in no hurry.

I am biased. Despite all the "anti corporate" crowd, I guess I generally like Starbucks, and their style of coffee. Lacking that, in smaller towns, you have to adapt, and Montana Coffee Traders is a good choice here.

Located on the main street, which has become sort of a Montana version of "old Downtown Scottsdale", with sundry gift shops, restaurants, interior designers, etc. (who buys this stuff?),it is part gift shop, part coffee shop, but the coffee dominates,it is definitely not an afterthought. I noticed that the tourists come in the front door off the main street and sit in the front. Locals come in the alley door and tend to use tables in the back where it is quieter. Lots of wifi going on with the locals. I first sat at the front, but while my coffee was being brewed (Americano fanatic) I relocated to a table near the back,to pick up some local flavor. At the next table, two thirty something women chatted, one relating why she just left her husband, etc.. So even in Montana paradise, life goes on.

The "barista" was obviously a ski bum type, who seemed a bit distracted by friends who would come in to the shop. It would not hurt for some of these employees to learn a bit more customer service. At Starbucks, you do it or you are gone.

The coffee was ok. I did order a piece of their homemade lemon and blueberry layer cake. At $3.50 a good deal, as this was a large piece, with real whole local blueberries inside.Having made cakes, I know how much it costs to make a good one. This slice was so rich that I saved half for my hotel room!

I would return to this coffee shop in the future. But next time I will go down the alley (alleys are safe here-hey, it's Montana, not Chicago!) and come in the back like the locals!!

Great coffee with a heart. They were one of the first roasters to buy and sell shade-grown coffee, coffee grown in the tropics while preserving the forests for wildlife.
