Flathead forest and lake are beautiful. We were told the lake is the largest lake west of the Mississippi. Unfortunately during our visit the smoke from the forest fires kept us from enjoying it to its fullest,

The area is very isolated. Take what you need for the day. You will find no stores, gas or food. Bear spray and a hand gun I would strongly recommend. Make sure you fuel tank is full before heading to spotted bear. No cell service in most areas. Hiking, fishing, berry picking in late July are all available. Float the south fork river is very popular. The road can be very dusty.

Beautiful Scenery. They day we visited the visitor's center had 3 staff on hand to answer questions and provide camping and local information. Along the drive we got to see a nest of osprey which was a nice sight.

Normally I plan our family vacations with great care. I admit I am responsible for a big blunder on our recent trip to Flathead Lake and Glacier this year. We had been there "before". What could go wrong? The only thing that changed was- we brought our new 11 month year old Golden Doodle puppy named 'Bear". Dogs are not allowed on trails in Glacier National Park. I was caught without a plan and began calling vets in the area to do a doggie day-care for us. In West Glacier- there is no place to board a dog. I learned after we returned home I could have stayed at the KOA in East Glacier known as Marys Lake Campground. They offer doggie Daycare.
We decided to explore the flathead national forest. We loved Polson Montana and Flathead Lake. The lake area is so beautiful it looks like heaven. The blue hues are magical and I learned the lake is the largest and cleanest in North America next to Lake Superior. This photo is of Flathead Dam. This is a small hike- that allows dogs- and the view is stunning. In fact, most of Flathead Lake on the south side is reservation land and dogs are allowed. We also hiked the Great Bear Wilderness in West Glacier since it allowed dogs and it is twice as big as Glacier. See Hungry Horse Dam in tis location. It really is beautiful.
