“Great location if expensive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

This accommodation was a bit of a distress booking, having arrived south of Yellowstone and having to drive further than we liked when our first option of location was fully booked - the whole town !!
For that reason, we went for a higher budget than we would have liked - but what a find! It was overkill for just two people - better suited to a family.
The cabin is not in the middle of the forest - it overlooks hotels - but there is was an attractive cluster around a communal fire pit which was lit each day around 6 so that we could bake our s'mores each evening and maybe meet with some of our fellow travellers. The ingredients for s'more were provided daily - a nice touch.
The cabin facilities were good - a well equipped kitchenette, including a good coffee maker ofcourse, two comfy queen sized beds and a lovely shower with robes included.
The real advantage is that it's a five minute drive from the west entry to Yellowstone and, when you return after a long day at the park, you are just 5 minutes stroll from the restaurants and shops of West yellowstone.
The only negative - Cabin 20 is an adjoining cabin with Cabin 21. when they were is, we could virtually hear them breathing !!

Was it value for money? Maybe that's a tough call - but it was certainly a delightful place to come back to after a busy day

Room Tip: I'm not sure what the rest of the cabins were like but we were in cabin 20 which was closest to...

Thanks for taking the time to review our Explorer Cabins at Yellowstone. We truly appreciate your final decision being a stay in our cabins. We are thrilled you enjoyed the amenities, especially the s’mores ! We are looking into making improvements that would decrease the noise passage between cabin 20 & 21, thanks for bringing that to our attention. Happy Traveling to you, please come stay with us again!

The other reviews echo our experience: friendly service, nice amenities and personal touches with housekeeping deficiencies. We stayed one night and appreciated the location for our yellowstone visit... Certainly a solid option for family travel.

Me and my folks stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin for 4 nights and liked it for the most part. The cabins aren't exactly private in the woods but more along the road, still there is no noise from cars. Since the cabins opened recently they still have that new feeling to them that I liked. The cabins are well furnished, have great appliances and beds. I liked that I could use the walking sticks, flashlight and binoculars that were in my cabin. I liked the firepits that were close to the cabins and the included S'mores kit. Now the negative stuff: Housekeeping: Cabin wasn't as clean as I would have liked it to be. Found some hairs and there were dirty towels in the bathroom, got that cleaned up quickly but I think that this should be fixed. A/C: Every time that I would turn on the A/C it sounded like a 747 taking off from my room so I had to listen to that all night! Shared facilities: The pool, fitness room, laundry, etc. is all shared with the hotel across the road so expect that some of the facilities can be very busy. All in all this is a great place to stay but I would really want the above negatives fixed because they did bother me quite a bit. I would recommend to stay here!

Room Tip: A cabin farther away from the road is better.

Thank you for taking time to post about your family’s stay in a new two-bedroom Yellowstone cabin. Many apologies for the below standard housekeeping - there is no excuses for that. We are very happy that you enjoyed the cabin’s features and amenities. Yes, the A/C unit is located in the hallway as opposed to a closet so it can be noisy, apologies. That you for recommending us and we look forward to your family returning and staying at the Explorer Cabins at Yellowstone.

It's a rare treat to stay in a brand new place as nice as the explorer cabins. From what we could see driving around the area, it might be the best place to stay In West Yellowstone.

THE CABIN: We had a two room, one bath "old faithful" cabin with a bedroom, a living area/kitchenette and a charming little porch. The cabins are furnished to a very high standard with good quality bedding and towels. They give you lots of nice homey extras like bathrobes, walking sticks, big mugs for hot chocolate, refillable water bottles, and a smores making kit to use at the firepit outside the cabin. The kitchenette is sufficient for light cooking but didn't have much more than a few pots and the basic dishes. Hopefully that will change as they do more to furnish the cabins. It would also be nice if they added a small table and chairs for eating. We slept really well in the plush king bed. The unit really does look just like the photos on the website. We didn't have any trouble with housekeeping, but if they don't stay on top of good cleaning, this place could quickly decline. They are still figuring out what is needed in the rooms, and I agree about the stackable laundry machines being necessary. I also think they should include an ice maker. Going to the main hotel just for ice was inconvenient.

STAFF: The staff there were really nice and helpful. I especially appreciated the warm welcome they gave us when we checked in after a long day on the road.

AREA: The town of West Yellowstone is kind of a family tourist trap, but it's the best location for exploring that side of the park. In the end we were glad we chose it over other options. The Explorer Cabins were a nice oasis in the midst of the town.

ACTIVITIES: Although we didn't use the indoor pool at the main hotel, I could see it would be great for kids. We wanted one really nice dinner, and the options in town are pretty limited so we drove about 15 minutes to the Bar N Ranch where we had an excellent meal. Old Faithful is about an hour away, Yellowstone Canyon is an hour and Yellowstone lake is a little over 90 mins. I also recommend the Gallatin river valley on the route to Bozeman. Driving up highway 191 was really scenic and it appeared to be a very popular fishing area.

TIPS: These cabins aren't in a scenic wooded area, they're across the parking lot from the Yellowstone hotel. They're also surrounded by other hotels. It's sort of a man made campground/park setting at the edge of a town consisting of hotels and motels. Our cabin, #2 was in a little horseshoe shaped grouping. We also had a cluster of trees right outside the back bedroom window. But not all the units had trees like that. It felt like a nice secluded nature setting even though it wasn't. We were very pleased with it, and I think most people would be as long as you're not expecting an especially scenic location. It was still quiet and peaceful. Some of the other cabins directly face the street. Even though there's not much street traffic, those seemed less desirable.

Located just minutes away from Yellowstone entrance, however these cabins are in the heart of a busy tourist town. NOT secluded, but they are spacious and fairly comfortable. I recommend running all the dishes through the dishwasher before use as many of the dishes were dirty with food particles. The toaster did not work and the kitchenette has only two burners and no stove.
Part of the price is to include a private parking spot, however by nightfall if you aren't in your spot the hotel patrons will use it- we even had some park in front of our bedroom window on the lawn.
The air conditioning is extremely loud- like a jet engine.
Overall nice design and meant to be comfortable, not a good value for the price.

Our family of 4 adults and one 6 year old stayed in one of the 2 bedroom cabins. We had plenty of room - ended up using the two outdoor chairs from the front porch for extra seating in the living room area. The location is conveniently located about 1/4 mile from the entrance of Yellowstone. We enjoyed the cute decor, comfy beds, large flat screen TV, gas fire pit, free use of binoculars/flashlight/walking sticks, well appointed kitchenette and friendly staff! One negative - I wish I would have checked before buying ice cream - there was no freezer in our little refrigerator. :)

I believe this just maybe the best place to stay period in and around Yellowstone. Everything is of course new.
We had a 2 bedroom cabin. The bathroom was wonderful! The towels and amenities were top notch. The kind you would find in 5 star rated hotels! The Kitchenette was perfect. The couch was comfortable. They needed to figure out how to add another chair in the living room area. We were a family of 5 and it didn't work very well in the evenings or mornings.
The beds were so comfortable and large. Our family absolutely loved these cabins. The smores were a nice touch except our marshmellows seemed to be stale and the candy bar had melted previously and re-hardened which made it seem stale also.
They almost got it right except for the following:
Hot water - not sure whose idea it was to put such small hot water heater in these units but that was short sighted and honestly I think they were looking to cut costs. I understand they are supposed to be replacing them with larger units so now it is going to end up costing them more in the long run than if they had done it right the first time. The Air Conditioner unit was extremely loud. Not sure how they could have fixed this.
They should have put in stackable washer/dryers as walking up the street to 2 washers/2 dryers for all of the units plus a hotel just isn't worth it at all. We ended up going to the laundry mat.
We never had an issue with housekeeping. They came in and made up the beds and replaced towels like clockwork.
I would have given this place a 5 but with some of the issues we had it brings it down to a 4. The hotwater issue itself was a big turnoff as we took to many cold showers. They knew this was an issue and didn't even offer to discount anything further for the trouble.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask if they have replaced the hot water heater in the room. You don't want the sma...

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review of your stay. Your comments have hit the mark on our areas of improvement. We are in the process of replacing all of the hot water heaters with on demand heaters as yes, they are too small. We are looking into ways to reorganize the living room area in the Yellowstone Cabins so families like yours can be more comfortable. This is the first request for a stack-able washer/dryer so it has been passed onto our Regional VP, thank you. We have learned to adjust the fan power on the AC/Heat units but it looks like we missed your cabin; many apologies as yes, they can be loud if not adjusted. It looks like the sun took most of the fun out the S’mores treat by doing the cooking for you. We will watch the placement of the S’mores kit in each cabin relative to the sun coming into the windows near the kitchenette. Thank you for your grace and understanding of our growing pains since we opened on 7/1. Comments like yours help us keep our finger on the pulse of what we can improve. We look forward to seeing you again offering you a great cabin experience complete with an ample supply of hot water and a S’mores kit that you get to cook.
