We arrived in West Yellowstone after a 5 hour car trip from Salt Lake City and made this our first must-see destination. We were not disappointed; the park facilitator instructed the children to hide food under tree stumps and foliage (the bears had not been released yet!) The grizzlies came out and using their long claws, turned over the logs to find the treats (carrots). Everyone was enthralled. The small pack of wolves were out in another compound and very active. It did sadden me to see that while these animals are all safe and fed, the wilderness is really their home. You must read the history of how these animals came to be in captivity to put it in perspective. The facility is well managed, the visitor centres have video presentations and a fireplace ; lots of background and research has been put into it - our trip to Yellowstone would not have been complete without this visit.

It's always a little sad to see a caged wild animal. My kids liked to see the bears up close, but got bored fast.

As if the exhibits themselves weren't enough, during the summer kids have an opportunity to go learn about the bears and feed them. A staff member holds a teaching session then takes the kids in to hide the food. Then the bears are let out and the kids get to see how long it takes for a bear to find them. We also adopted one of the wolves while we visited and my 9 year old nephew was thrilled with this idea. Just a great, great place doing amazing works.

Each year we make a visit into the Center. When our children were little, they enjoyed "feeding" the bears. Great place to take the family.

The admission building has great displays of taxidermy bears. They are displayed in the everyday life of bears. Outside, they often do programs with the live animals. The bears are on one side of the center, and two packs of wolves are on the other side. Toward the end they have a few birds of prey that were rescued. When I visited, they had a good demonstration on how to use bear spray. A common program is that they ask for kids to volunteer to hide food for the bears. Then they release the bears and you can watch the bears use their senses to find the food. Overall, this is a great place to visit and learn.
