Yellowstone Tour Guides - Day Trips

We spent 6 days in Yellowstone Park in late Sep. During these 6 days, we joined 3 different tour companies. Yellowstone Tour Guide is one of them and we did have some reservations about their service. Actually, Lava Creek Adventures is the real best one we will highly recommend to any group or anyone who doesn’t want to drive a car for days. For my review about Lava Creek, pls go to

Back to Yellowstone Tour Guide, we joined them for a Lower Loop day tour. Their van is quite old and it was also not clean. There were a couple of times that the driver had problems starting the engine. The guide talked quite a lot but it seems that his interested topic (e.g. DNA research done in the park) was not much of our concern. The itinerary was limited also. We went twice to the Old Faithful (one during the morning to see the eruption & the other for lunch). We went to the West Thumb and the Paint Pot in the afternoon. We ended the tour quite early. At 3:15pm, we were back to West Yellowstone. I should ask the itinerary first but I didn’t because it was a last minute decision to join them as Buffalo Tour suddenly cancelled their trip the day before. We missed Prismatic Geyser & Morning Glory, etc.

My initial experience with them is one & a half month before the trip when I emailed them through their website and rang them up. The first time when I called them from HK, a lady answered the phone and I heard her baby crying. Perhaps it was too early for them so that’s why the call was diverted to a staff’s home. When I sent them emails, they only replied me a few days or a week later. They claimed that they offered the most variety of tours during that season and their prices are low. However, they just delivered the average. If you expect more, don’t join this one.

My family and I were skiing at Big Sky and took a day trip into Yellowstone with Yellowstone Tour Guides. We were picked up at Big Sky by van . Our guide drove us to West Yellowstone and on the way we stopped to look at migrating male elk and some moose cows. He gave us lots of information about the area as we drove. In West yellowstone we transferred to a snow van, a 15 passenger ford van converted to tracks for driving on snow. There were 12 tourists in all and rather than cram us into one van they sent us in two separate vans. The travel is a bit rattly but warm and fairly comfortable. The drive in and out is amazing with lots of stops whenever we wanted one. We saw elk and bison in huge numbers,( often within a few feet of our van, )coyotes, swans, and an eagle. We also got to see the geysers, mud pots, etc with no one else around. Old Faithful performed for about 100 people. The Inn at Old Faithful had surprisingly good food and gift shop at quite reasonable prices. Our guide made it clear that he feels that he has the best job in the world and added greatly to our enjoyment.

Yellowstone in winter is great, although the tours have become a bit too much of an industry. (Stop. Get out. Snap a picture. Get back in.)

Yellowstone Tour Guides showed promise among the competition, up until they didn't show up on time and the person on the phone gave nothing but attitude. (His solution was that I could book with someone else. Thanks.) The tour (starting and ending an hour late) consisted of a van ride from Big Sky to West Yellowstone, transfer to a snow coach (a Ford van on treads), in to Madison Junction, down to Old Faithful Lodge for lunch and an eruption with a stop at Midway Geyser Basin, back to Madison Junction with a stop at Biscuit Basin, then back to West Yellowstone and on to Big Sky.

The guide was knowledgeable but irritating. At the end of the day, I felt like I saw a few highlights and took some nice photos, and was 'handled' the whole way. It was an OK day. And I could have done without the attitude.

Yellowstone Tour Guides is run by a couple of homegrown guys. They offer seasonally appropriate tours of Yellowstone & Grand Tetons. Tours are limited to a maximium of 9 participants in a "coach" (big 10 passenger van), so you receive truly personalized service. We took two day tours with this outfit - the Yellowstone Grand Loop and an all day jaunt to Grand Tetons. Both guides were well versed in the history and scientific facts of their respective tours. The tour monologue was quite entertaining. We had plenty of opportunity for photo ops and viewed a variety of wildlife including black bears, grizzly bears (with cub), moose (with calf), elk (with calf), and bison (with calf), We also viewed bald eagles and a yellow marmut. When a "bison jam" occured during the Yellowstone Tour, our guide, Jim, quickly reversed the tour route, so we would not waste valuable time sitting in traffic waiting for a huge bison herd to get off of the road. Smaller tours allow the guides to take you places the big motorcoaches and jitneys cannot. (It also allows the tour guide to personally redirect you to the correct thing you should be looking at!) Our Grand Teton guide, Scott, went out of his way to accomodate our requests for extra time at certain stops. If something looked interesting that wasn't on the "prescribed route" he had the flexibility to stop and investigate. We greatly appreciated this. The sack lunches for both days were also scrumptious. No half-baked, bland "tour" food here.
