We had never been to Montana in our lives, and thought it would be a great destination as we live on the Southeast Coast. The first time we arrived, we drove along the Montana countryside, and turned into the ranch and came upon a lodge that was more grand than we could have ever imagined. It was amazing to come upon this stunning lodge for the first time, set below the mountains and beside the ranch pond. We did not know what to expect, but once we met Chris Pfadt, the Ranch Manager, we knew our trip was going to be better than we had even hoped for. He immediately made us feel welcomed and told us that whatever Montana adventure we could imagine was there for the taking. Our four subsequent trips in 3 years proved that we found our western home away from home - we have never felt more comfortable or at ease than at Grey Cliffs Ranch. The lodge is impeccably designed and uniquely decorated, with everything from great western artwork to big game mounts. It is hard to pick a favorite room as they are all fantastic, clean, spacious and just unbelievably comfortable.
My girlfriend had never been fly-fishing, and Chris got her outfitted and on the pond. Before I knew it she was hauling out a rainbow bigger than any I had ever seen. From that point on, we took on every river we could. We hit the Upper and Lower Madison, the Yellowstone and the Gallatin to name a few. We waded and did float trips, and most times she caught the big browns, and I caught the rainbows and cutthroats. Chris never failed to put us on the big fish and the hot spots, including catching the salmon fy hatch on the upper Madison this year! Our vacation pictures, especially the big fish, are always a hit when we return home. On the few days that the weather wasn't the best for fishing, Chris would offer activites that were unique and one of a kind adventures in their own right.
In our opinion, there is no better Montana experience than this. As a matter of fact, I don't even want to write this because I want this place to stay special. GCR is a place filled with wonder, excitement and comfort.
P.S. Get the grits for breakfast, Chris makes 'em like he was raised in the South.
