“There is no better Montana experience.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2011

We had never been to Montana in our lives, and thought it would be a great destination as we live on the Southeast Coast. The first time we arrived, we drove along the Montana countryside, and turned into the ranch and came upon a lodge that was more grand than we could have ever imagined. It was amazing to come upon this stunning lodge for the first time, set below the mountains and beside the ranch pond. We did not know what to expect, but once we met Chris Pfadt, the Ranch Manager, we knew our trip was going to be better than we had even hoped for. He immediately made us feel welcomed and told us that whatever Montana adventure we could imagine was there for the taking. Our four subsequent trips in 3 years proved that we found our western home away from home - we have never felt more comfortable or at ease than at Grey Cliffs Ranch. The lodge is impeccably designed and uniquely decorated, with everything from great western artwork to big game mounts. It is hard to pick a favorite room as they are all fantastic, clean, spacious and just unbelievably comfortable.

My girlfriend had never been fly-fishing, and Chris got her outfitted and on the pond. Before I knew it she was hauling out a rainbow bigger than any I had ever seen. From that point on, we took on every river we could. We hit the Upper and Lower Madison, the Yellowstone and the Gallatin to name a few. We waded and did float trips, and most times she caught the big browns, and I caught the rainbows and cutthroats. Chris never failed to put us on the big fish and the hot spots, including catching the salmon fy hatch on the upper Madison this year! Our vacation pictures, especially the big fish, are always a hit when we return home. On the few days that the weather wasn't the best for fishing, Chris would offer activites that were unique and one of a kind adventures in their own right.

In our opinion, there is no better Montana experience than this. As a matter of fact, I don't even want to write this because I want this place to stay special. GCR is a place filled with wonder, excitement and comfort.

P.S. Get the grits for breakfast, Chris makes 'em like he was raised in the South.

We have just reserved our third trip to Grey Cliffs. Every trip has been fantastic, the lodge is one of the finest we have ever had the good fortune to stay in. The lodge is set in what feels like a very remote area, yet it is close to Bozeman and an hour drive to Big Sky, the Madison River runs a few minutes drive form the gates. This year we spent a week bird hunting, fishing, shooting, archery hunting for deer and hiking all conducted on the ranch. The ranch manager "Chris" also accompanied me on an unforgettable bison hunt on the Triple D Ranch nearby, and guided me on a backcountry bow hunt for elk in the mountains above Yellowstone. Both hunting trips exceeded expectations, and resulted in over us harvesting enough meat to last our family 2 years. Chris also went beyond the extra mile to assist in taxidermy, meat processing and packaging and shipping the processed meat to our home in Hawaii. All of this coupled with the great service and food makes Grey Cliffs one of our favorite places to visit.

We have stayed at Grey Cliffs Ranch three years in a row. We have stayed at more expensive places, and have decided that Grey Cliffs is without a doubt the best value for the money. The lodge is one of the most beautiful we have found. The location is perfect for people who love the outdoors.

Grey Cliffs Ranch is a secluded, quiet, beautiful place that allows guests the opportunities to do most anything they want. The Madison and Gallatin Rivers are very close by, with world-class trout fishing. You can hike the many wonderful hills on the ranch, go horseback riding, shoot trap or sit on the deck and read a book. The atmosphere and environment are very conducive to relaxation. There are several sitting rooms where you can also read.
The rooms are large and extremely comfortable. Dining is an exceptional pleasure. Starting with whatever you want for breakfast, to a gourmet dinner served by their chef, Liz Bauer, the food is superb.

Grey Cliffs does not have a liquor license, so, if you prefer a glass of wine with dinner, you’ll want to bring your own.

Chris Pfadt is a manager extraordinaire. He pays close attention to detail in everything that goes on around the ranch. He is also a top notch fishing guide. It’s evident that his goal is to ensure that your stay is exactly what you hoped for.

I travel frequently for business and I have had the pleasure to stay at Grey Cliffs Ranch a few times. The lodge is absolutely beautiful. The well thought out design and construction is immediately apparent. It is quiet and secluded yet only about a 40 minute drive from Bozeman airport. Bird and deer hunting is available on the ranch and the Madison River is only a stones throw away. The ranch also offers a 5 stand Sporting Clays course and horseback riding should be available in the near future. It is sometime hard to combine business with please but staying at the ranch permits me to do just that.
Perhaps the best thing about the ranch is Chris Pfadt, the ranch manager. Chris will go out of his way to make sure your stay lives up to your expectations.
