“Best food in Montana!!!”
Reviewed December 17, 2007

My husband and I are from Albuquerque, NM and we were traveling around the Flathead Valley because we'd like to relocate here. We stayed at bed and breakfasts because they are more personable and we wanted to get to know locals. Kathleen's bed and breakfast was by far our favorite. Beautiful location, sweet rooms, fabulous food! (we totally recommend going there for breakfast, lunch and dinner!), Kathleen was so helpful and friendly, she really gave us a homey feeling. She recommended some great hikes and even trusted us to take her dog, Nikki, with us! We loved it and will be back!

  • Liked — Great food, sweet rooms, we were treated very well
  • Disliked — Our bed was a little too hard

My wife and I stayed at Laughing Horse in late September 2007. It's a comfortable, relaxing lodge. The food is wonderful (the big baked chocolate chip cookie is amazing) and the owner is engaging, well travelled and worldly. We had several very interesting conversations on several topics.

If you're looking for a place to kick back and relax and enjoy intelligent and witty conversation, this is the place. If you're lucky, Samson (the African gray parrot) may talk to you.

  • Liked — The ambience
  • Disliked — We had to leave.

My husband and I have actually stayed at the Laughling Horse Lodge several times most recently in October 2007. Obviously, we enjoyed our visit enough to return and return and return.
The locale is most scenic, the recreational opportunities plentiful, the food wonderful, and the host most engaging and delightful. We have not only recommended the Laughling Horse to acquaintances, but to freiends and family as well. The guest rooms may be small, but are nicely done with a western motif and are clean and comfortable. Our dining experiences have been interesting, nicely presented and foremostly enjoyable. Kathleens culinary abilities are exceptional as is her offering of a wine list.

  • Liked — The valley setting.
  • Disliked — The lack of modern amenities (TV, radio, phone in room), but that is not all bad.

Great place. Small, relaxing lodge run by one of the friendliest innkeepers in Montana. Great courtyard, perfect for making new friends or just reading a good book. Oh yeah, and the food was top notch too! The next time we are anywhere near Bigfork we will head back to the Laughing Horse Lodge!!

We randomly found this place and it was very cute, clean and comfortable. The room was small, but nice and there's a great garden. There's a lake across the street and the breakfast was really high quality.

Many of the other reviews give high praise to the owner, however, she really wasn't all that friendly to anyone in my party. Her personality just seemed kind of harsh and she didn't have a whole lot of patience. I realize that the restaurant (which has a great menu) was very busy, but I would have liked a little more friendliness. I guess we just didn't feel all that comfortable or welcomed.

I'm not sure if I would stay at the Laughing Horse Lodge again and this is mostly because of the fact that there is no air conditioning. The room was hot and steamy all night long. No one could sleep including my dog.

The Laughing Horse Lodge definitely has its charm. It's a great place, just not great for everyone.

  • Liked — The great breakfast and location.
  • Disliked — The lack of air conditioner and the poor WiFi signal.

Laughing Horse Lodge is a wonderful place to stay. The rooms are nice and clean. There is a nice living room where you can sit and read one of the many books availble or watch TV. If the weather is nice, you can sit outside in the garden or it is a short walk to the water. Cooper the dog is so lovable and friendly that you feel right at home. The food was fantatstic- you must try the mussles and bread. My only regret is that we only stayed one night.

Imagine the pressure of planning accommodations for 10 motorcyclists on a 4 day loop from Calgary to Helena and back. Add to the mix that the age range is from 25 to 58, the weather is iffy, and most of us are related ……

See my relief when we arrived at the Laughing Horse Lodge to find it everything promised on the website, and more! The Lodge oozes charm, and a blackboard on the front step listed directions to the rooms prepared for us. Kathleen greeted us as we were settling in, with offers of coffee or beer – and we all chorused ‘beer’! It had been a long ride, and we were stopped for the night, so it was time to unwind. This rider especially appreciated the bubble bath provided!

The lounge is cozy, with well stocked library, beer on tap and a selection of wines available on the honour system and TV for those inclined. Lovely flower beds bloomed amid art treasures and surrounded an outdoor courtyard - a delightful surprise and the perfect place to recount the sights of our trip. The rooms are laid out in an L-shape and linked together by a wooden porch. The rooms were quaint, comfortable and clean.

Dinner was wonderful – plenty to choose from for the carnivores and the veggie folks. Very reasonable prices, everything was tasty – and my advice to all is to leave room for dessert!

The hot breakfast included was much more than anticipated – I arrived last to our table, and made the mistake of thinking that the hot cereal, fresh fruit, scones and coffee was ‘all’ there was. But that was just the first course!

Kathleen is refreshingly forthright and extremely competent – and great fun! Treat yourself to her great hospitality and book into the Laughing Horse Lodge.
