Sherlock Motel, Inc.
Ranked #3 of 7 Hotels in Shelby
Reviewed October 9, 2013

This is a no-frills motel, close to the main street and away from the railway tracks where some other accommodation lies. No breakfast is provided. The owner Sonja gave us a good welcome, an excellent recommendation for dinner, the Frontier Restaurant, and a less good one for breakfast, the Griddle

Room Tip: Room 14, upstairs on the corner, has two doubles and is quiet once the traffic dies down at night.

We choose Sherlock Motel based on Tripadvisor reviews. We were looking for a less expensive alternative to the the high priced chain motels.
The room was clean, but had lots of flying bugs. While we're not creeped out by bugs, we were a bit disappointed, because this motel has so many "excellent" ratings. In all fairness, due to the fact that it's harvest time, the bugs will be moving.
The air conditioner is very old and a bit noisy, but we figured out how to make it work best for us.
The bathroom light and lights above the vanity outside of the bathroom are all on the same switch, so turning on the bathroom light in the middle of the night means the entire room is lit up. A quirk that probably cannot be fixed because of the age of the building.
We stayed 2 nights, and enjoyed visiting with the motel owner. She was helpful and seemed genuinely interested in our visit. The personal touch is such a rare thing now days.

After reading reviews on Tripadvisor, I decided to stop here with my two kids on our way from Yellowstone to Glacier NP. We arrived very late at night and the awesome owner, Sonja, was waiting up, concerned for us. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The mattresses are newer and we had a great nights sleep. Retro is a good word. We loved the charm. Our room had two big beds, a desk and chair, 2 chairs, tv, fast internet, a large sink area and a big window. There were also two beautiful, signed, art prints. Just after leaving on a Friday morning, our car had problems. Two very nice people helped us find a mechanic (hard to do in Shelby), we called Sonja and she offered to come and get us. We got back to the motel and she called one of the few restaurants in town to see if they were still serving lunch, then called the local pool for their hours, offering to drive us there. We went to the pool and the local history Museum ( really cool old stuff). This kind of costumer service was such a pleasant surprise and a novelty to my kids. I would chose it over a hotel chain any day. Thanks so much to nice mechanic who came in Sat morning to fix our car after the part came in from Billings, to the couple who found us that mechanic, to the curator of the museum ( who was also a part of it) to the wonderful owners of The Sherlock Motel. This leg of our trip could have been nightmare but these people, especially Sonja made the day spent in a small town with such wonderful, helpful people, a special memory of our road trip.

This hotel is one of the best places in Shelby. Sonja and Mark make sure you are well looked after, even helping you with the best places to eat. We have been coming this way for a couple of years now, and stay would not stay anywhere else. Rooms are retro but clean, and beds are very comfy. Will be back for more visits.

Room Tip: Albertson;s just across the street and downtown walking distance

I agree with Bruce A's description below, although I didn't find the electrical outlets scarce and my room had a brown/beige shag, a small fridge but no microwave. As Bruce A. said, owner Sonja was very friendly and helpful.

I would choose The Sherlock over a chain hotel any day.

Coffee: in room Hamilton Beach-single serve machine using Wolfgang Puck 'pods' (reg and decaf)

Groceries: a short 2 block walk to Albertson's if you arrive on a Sunday and find most places closed or don't feel like eating at Subway.

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs if you're sensitive to noise as trains are nearby.

Shelby appears to be locked in a time warp of the last century. The restaurants, the grocery store and most of the lodging establishments look like something out of the 1960s/1970s/1980s. This doesn't mean that they are unacceptable, it just means that they are just representing rural Americana. The Sherlock Motel is of the same genre but what sets it apart from the rest is the owner/manager - Sonja. She has been doing this for thirty years and just exudes old fashioned charm and hard work. Her motel has 10-12 units, is within walking distance of downtown, and just far enough away from the railroad tracks that the train noise doesn't bother you over the sounds of the window mounted air conditioner. The motel was very clean, both inside and outside. Our room had green shag carpeting, an old couch that has seen better days, a glass table from long ago, two comfortable double beds (that had newer mattresses), a microwave and refrigerator and a small bathroom that had recently been painted. The water pressure in the shower was excellent but the electrical outlets were very scarce. Surprisingly, the Sherlock had high speed Internet access which functioned very well.
We chose this establishment because of a TA review of last year by a traveling motorcyclist who (after registering with Sonja) decided to stay at a local campground after she suggested it to him. He ended up leaving his credit card and driver's license in the motel copy machine but she tracked him down within a few hours and gave him back his important cards. This type of customer service is getting harder to find these days and deserves to be rewarded with additional business.
It was a joy to talk with her and hear some of the tales of motel management in Northern Montana. I would recommend that other travelers do the same if they have the opportunity.

We were just looking for a night out of the RV with a clean room, hot shower and a good sleep. This place was 100% on all of the above. It's a mom and pop establishment...very friendly and helpful owner. It's very retro in style, but has free wifi and cable TV and met our every need.

Room Tip: We were downstairs and parked at the door.
