“Bad experience and zero response to our e-mail”
Reviewed August 9, 2008

My wife and I are retired South African tourists , we had been touring around Alaska,Montana, Idaho and Oregon and Washington State by car for three months.
We arrived at this St.Mary's Motel and booked in early afternoon on June 4th after reading a recommendation in the local Glacier Park tourism newsletter. We were told at the desk that there was accommodation at the rate they mentioned ($80.25) provided we slept in one bed in a room which had two beds, which sounded a bit odd.. We complied and stayed in Room no 8 for one night.
There were several issues which we raised with the desk attendant who said they would send someone to fix, but nobody arrived.
the TV was not in operation at all.
the shower head would not give full water flow, the rest ran out uncontrollably into the bath via the faucet.
the toilet seat was very loose.
there was no light in the doorway area, it was broken, parts had been stripped.
the following morning there was not a cup of coffee available, we were told that the coffee machine in the office was broken.
The sign on the door said that nobody would be available at the office until 08h30, as tourists we could not wait.
I sent an e-mail with a list of our issues (which were more than just these items) once we returned to our Portland OR base on or around 10th July but received no reply.
We are back in South Africa now and decided to write this and frankly would not recommend this establishment unless there were significant changes..

Stayed June 2008

Without a reservation we drove up the hill looking for a place to stay. The lady in the office said she had one room left and it was a cabin all by itself called Grizzly Cabin. Driving up the hill I was more than a little apprehensive with the look (just not new looking) the other buildings on the property.

We took the key to have a peek and we were pleasantly surprised to find a gem! The cabin was small, but had a living room, separate bedroom (big - 2 queens and a roll out folded up in the corner).

The bathroom was new add on. The view is superb, and you have your own porch to sit and watch the sun set and rise in the morning.

Draw backs, no tv, (but it did have a refrigerator and microwave), no hair dryer, and no coffee pot. We played cards, and watched nature for a change.

The finishing work (drywall seams, etc) are rather crude in the bathroom, but we weren't there to grade it or spend time looking at it.

Close to the park, and you dont feel like one of thousands staying there.

We stayed one night in August on our way into Canada. The price was $35 less per night than Rising Sun Motor Inn in the park. From what we saw driving by Rising Sun and what we had read on Trip Advisor, we cancelled our September reservations and stay at Red Eagle while we visited the park on our return, staying a total of 3 nights. Our stay at Red Eagle was very nice, with a spacious clean room and an awesome view into the park from our 2nd floor room. We ate all our meals at the Johnson's Cafe which was in the same parking lot. The meals there were very good homestyle cooking and inexpensive. The location was great for going up to the Many Glacier Hotel area (30 minute drive) to view wildlife in the evenings and for heading to Logan Pass during the day. This is not a resort with amenities but a nice place to lay your head at night after an awesome day in Glacier National Park!

Management was rude and always unavailable to talk to. Had an emergency (early checkout) and management said they would issue a credit for the night I didn't stay. After two months and three phone calls, I have never been able to talk to someone in management about the credit I never received. So, of course, the credit was never issued.

This motel was recommended by staff at the west entrance visitor center. We were very disappointed with the facility. For $110, we expect a things in the room to work. The outside and main light did not work. The TV would not turn on and there was no hair drier. The staff was not friendly at all. Asked her about expected time the sun rises and her only answer was I don't know. Didn't offer to find out. Lots of one line answer. Looks disinterested. Would not recomend to anyone.

We stayed at the Red Eagle for three nights (Mon-Tues-Wed), and were totally satisfied. We didn't expect a swanky place, and it's not, but it is clean, comfortable, adequately furnished and maintained, and the staff is friendly and helpful. It's a very short walk to an excellent restaurant, and a very short drive to another. The Red Eagle has a little roofed sitting porch where people hang out in the evening and share their hiking stories while looking at gorgeous scenery and wonderful sunsets! Couldn't ask for a better place to "get away from it all".

We we're lucky to find this place as our original planned accommodations had booked us in wrong. Stayed in a spacious little cabin with our own private deer.

  • Liked — Great views of the Glacier mountains
  • Disliked — Lots of flies, dead and alive, but that seems to be Montana in September
  • Tips/Secrets — See if the cabin is avaible for a little more independence
