Not too far off hwy 93 S, on your way from Whitefish to Missoula is this glorious building. The outside looks pretty good, but what made me ooh and ahh are the paintings inside and on the ceiling, like a mini Sistine Chaple. It is said the painter was a cook that came over with the Monks from Italy. Very spiritual.

This historical mission church is equal to many we've seen in Europe. Not to be missed.

We had planned to depart I-90 at St. Regis and enjoy a leisurely drive past Hot Springs and along Flathead Lake to arrive at the Glacier National Park area. A worker at the Montana visitor center recommended a different route which had opportunities for the St. Ignatius Mission, the Bison range, and a very nice view of the southern end of Flathead Lake. We're happy that we took the advice.

St. Ignatius Mission is a lovely building. The history of the mission is displayed in a couple of original buildings. The church building itself has lovely mural paintings -- very remarkable since they were not done by a professional artist. The grandeur inside the building is such a surprise because the outside doesn't look at all grand.

No admission is charged, but a donation is appreciated.
