“Wonderful Hotel, Restaurant & Activities!”
Reviewed July 24, 2009

We recently had the good fortune to stay at Chico Hot Springs Resort with a last minute reservation, after planning our vacation with little notice. What a lovely destination...our room (with 2 double beds) shared a bath down the hall (which was always vacant), and overlooked a beautiful grassy yard. The on-site restaurant was delicious, with a varied and exotic menu of appetizers, entrees and desserts and very nice servers. Don't miss the hot spring pool and horseback riding! We will return and would recommend this destination to all. M&NP, So. California

Fun place. Very lively and a bit loud at night. We stayed in the main lodge where the walls are thin so you hear from your neighbors in surrounding rooms.
Go for a soak in the pool but avoid the Poolside Grille. We waited 50 minutes for a to go order. One of the items ordered was a hamburger which was served cold and nearly raw in the middle. To the staff's credit, they handled it well with a refund and a quick replacement.
The main Dining Room offers a very nice breakfast buffet for a reasonable price.
Friendly staff and a very nice setting.

I loved Chico Hot springs. We stayed in one of the rustic cabins. It was clean and priced well. The hot springs pools are great .They are cleaned daily so this is a plus. The dinning room was excellent food.Food was a little high priced, not bad.Service overall was very good. The breakfast was disappointing. Also get a massage at the spa.The view was wonderful!! I would love to return.

First of all the pool side grille is pretty good for the cost. Cheaper than all the restaurants in Gardiner plus a great location. The pool had a lot of dead flies in it and bees buzzing about. They could skim the pool more often. Also it was crowded which we expected on a Friday night. Our accomodations - room with a sink - were CHEAP! It was also spotless. Dinner in the dining room cost more than our room. I had a medium rare filet ($29) which was definitely rare. My hubby's prime rib was good but probably overpriced. His mashed potatoes sucked. And the bread was definitely a day old. That is outrageous. The service was adequate. After dinner a waitress pointed out that they do have babysitting services available. Why was this not suggested when I made the dinner reservation with my 5 month old in tow?? Anyway we will go back. We will stick to the poolside grille. We will get a room in the lodge for cheap, cheap, cheap. Our kid is gonna love this place.

We had been looking forward to visiting Chico for several years... Pool was OK, but very crowded on a Tuesday afternoon in May. Accomodations (lower lodge) nice but not exceptional. I had high hopes for the dining room. DD's mac & chees was "the best". Salmon has over-cristed with cumin and bordering on being overcooked, veggies very good. DH gave his dinner an "average".
Chico is a nice place if you don't have raised expectations, as we did.

My husband and I stayed in one of the small rooms without a private bathroom in the main lodge. Since we don't mind simple accommodations we were happy with the room, and spent our time enjoying the hot springs with poolside bar (can't beat looking up at the mountains as you sit in the pool!) and the amazing food. We were able to find a great bottle of wine at the restaurant for only 20 dollars, the food was delicious, and Sunday brunch was only 8 dollars per person if you get the limited menu (big omelet plus fresh made sweet roll!). We ate well and had a great time for a very good price. The main lodge definitely has a lot of character -- if you are looking for a immaculate resort, this is not your place -- and if you are paying a lot more for one of the bigger rooms perhaps you will feel like this place is not up to snuff. If you are just looking for good food and a laid back environment you won't be disappointed.

We spent two nights at Chico in February with some friends and thoroughly enjoyed the pools, food, and unique facility.

This was our 12th visit to Chico over a 25-year period so we've been able to watch this unique place evolve from a funky, quiet, rustic hotel to a busy resort that has a small conference center, includes luxury accommodations, and has wifi in the lobby. Although we would prefer that it was unchanged from the first time we visited, we understand that change is necessary to survive. We keep returning to Chico because of what hasn't changed. Dogs are still allowed, the food and service in the restaurant are consistently superior especially considering the remoteness of the location, and you can still sip a drink from the saloon while relaxing in the pool. Best of all, unlike some historic hotels that have gone entirely upscale, the owners have made sure that Chico still offers lodging for all budgets and tastes.

After reading some of the previous negative reviews I get the impression many of the problems were primarily due to a poor choice of rooms. In over 40 years of travel I have never stayed anywhere else with as many lodging choices as Chico. In our 12 visits we've stayed in 8 entirely different places from two bedroom houses to tiny rooms in the main lodge with bathrooms down the hall. The challenge is to do your homework so you get the accommodation that best meets your needs. Don't expect a room in a 100-year old ramshackle building to have a level floor, soundproof walls, or a luxurious bathroom. Carefully review the options on the website and ask questions before you make a reservation.

Following are some other suggestions to improve your chances of having a pleasant stay:

Avoid weekends if possible. Chico on weekends is loud, hectic, and crowded. It's the opposite during the week.

Get a room in Warren's Wing if you want to be close to the restaurant, pool, and lobby without the noise and funkiness of the original building. Although the wing looks like it's part of the original building from the outside, the rooms are as modern, quiet, and comfortable as any hotel room you can find.

Although the seafood in the restaurant is ok considering the distance from the source, think about where you're at when ordering from the menu and take advantage of the opportunity to have a great steak.
