“Nice getaway spot, fun dog-sledding”
Reviewed January 7, 2008

The hotel is about 30 miles from the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park. We stayed in the lower lodge, which had modern facilities, was clean, well-heated in winter and overall very pleasant. The room was huge and the price was very reasonable.

There is an on-site dog-sledding office for Absaroka Dog Sledding and we booked well in advance for that. I'm glad we did as it was a fun thing to do and I would not have wanted to be staying at the hotel and find out about it but not be able to book. If you're going in winter and interested in this, book early to reserve your spot.

One night we had dinner with a small group in the wine cellar, which is a private room. It was gorgeous, intimate, classy and the food was excellent. The next night we had dinner in the main dining room. You have to reserve a dinner time when you reserve your room, which I thought was odd, but it's a small dining room and makes sense. It was very loud and therefore a little hard to converse, but not unbearable - just conversation noise not blaring music. The food was again very good.

We never did make it to the hot springs on site but heard rave reviews from others. We also didn't take advantage of the spa as we were too tired.

Overall, a nice getaway place with good views and decent service.

We love Chico Hot Springs. We visited for a freind's wedding and had a great time. We stayed in a new cabin above the main lodge (#707) and loved everything about it. The view is incredible! The food, hot springs, day spa and recreation possibilites are wonderful. We had a very relaxing weekend. Chico is a special place and much loved by the staff and returning guest. I hope they never change a thing!

We discovered Chico Hot Springs on our drive from Yellowstone to Bozeman three years ago. We have been going back ever since. It's rustic, no room service, tv etc. What it does offer is a beatiful, peaceful, setting to kick back and relax. They have a small day spa that offers massages, (no facials) you can horseback ride, hike and of course soak in the hot springs. Livingtston, Montana is only 20 minutes away and Yellowstone 30 minutes. Dinner is in the main lodge restaurant and I highly recommend the steak gorgonzola. After dinner you can kick up your heels at the Chico Saloon as on weekends they have a band.
The lodging offers something for everyone. Prices range from $49.00-$250.00 per night. The main hotel is 100 years old and it shows, rooms vary and are worn, many share baths. Warren's Wing is an addition to the old hotel and one of my favorite places to stay. It's in the middle of the action and the restaurant, and lobby (with wireless) and hot springs and Chico Bar are all right there. The furnishings in Warren's Wing rooms is simple, King bed, coffee maker, tub/shower combination and hairdryer. Our room was on the 2nd floor and very clean. It was quiet after 11pm and you can sleep with the windows open. We have also stayed in the North Forty Cabins, which are large private cabins, beautifully decorated with big bathrooms and jacuzzi tubs and separate shower This year we spent two nights in Warren's Wing and a night in the Caboose. The Caboose is an amazing experience. It's a real caboose converted to a beautiful bedroom/ sitting area complete with gas fireplace. Very special and romantic. We really enjoy active vacations and after a day's hike and exploration, it's great to soak in the hot springs. This is something Chico really needs to improve. The hot springs area. could use a facelift, but once you are in the pools it melts all your cares away. It's heavenly to soak under the big Montana star filled sky. We already have plans to return for 2008.

My family traveled from CA to WI this summer and Chico was by far our BEST stop!! I had eaten there 20 years ago and remembered it, which is a feat in itself!! Anyway, we had a romantic dinner in the dining room while the kids were at the pool grille, and we felt totally safe sleeping in separate rooms!! The pool was great, the saloon was too. I loved it and my 12 year old wants to go back, it was so quaint and relaxing. If you want an upscale, corporate type hotel you will not like it, but if you like unique, relaxing, funky places you will love it!! My only complaint is that the food in the main restaurant is SO good that I couldn't stay for a week or I would gain 10 pounds!! We are already planning a trip back in the near future!!

- I stayed in the Main Lodge in room #216 one night...above the restaurant kitchen...and cancelled my next night! Was kept awake by exhaust fan(?), banging of pots and pans, and voices until very late; then awakened very very early by the same noises from the morning crew.
- Water in the shower was slow to heat...several minutes!!!
- Front desk staff confused at times. Sometimes curt.
- Saloon had a strange odor.
- Guests spilling drinks in pool. Is it a good idea to serve alcohol in a HOT springs?

I've stayed at Chico Hot Springs for conferences several times (with a night before or after) and once for a long weekend getaway. (Lesson learned on the weekend: if you want to really be isolated, this is the place.)

Native Montanans love Chico-- they all remember it "back when" and still enjoy it as one of the nicer "resort" hotels in the state. It's one of the few "destination hotels" (a term I use advisedly) that average Montanans can still afford. It's a not a resort or destination in the larger sense-- it's a hotel with some very nice amenities and opportunities to participate in some local activities (hiking, horseback riding, fishing, snowmobiling in the winter... that kind of thing.)

This IS a family destination, and you WILL have kids around all the time, with the possible exception of early mornings in the pool. The kids will be in the dining room, the pool, the hallways, the front lawn, and everywhere else. If you don't like kids, you won't like Chico.

Because of the popularity and affordability with and for those of us who live here, yes, it is difficult to get reservations. As soon as you know you want to go, make reservations.

Before you make reservations, however, read the room descriptions on Chico's website very, very carefully. The cheapest rooms are literally a room with a sink in it-- the bathroom is down the hall. Rooms in the Main Lodge are RUSTIC. Remember that. They may have an ensuite bathroom, but it's an old hotel. Don't complain if you stay in the main lodge and it's "so old!" And it IS noisy. I've had people running up and down the halls, vomiting, making out, and otherwise carrying on outside my room until the wee hours. It comes with the territory. Need absolute dark and silence? Try one of the other parts of the property.

The big advantage (particularly for families) to staying in the Main Lodge is proximity to the pool-- you don't have to go outside until you actually get to the pool. From the Fisherman's Lodge, other outlying rooms, and the cabins, you'll have to walk a bit. Actually, if it's nice weather you can walk from the cabins-- after dark or when it's cold, you'll want to drive down to the lodge.

I've had good and bad experiences with their front desk staff-- sometimes they're friendly and helpful, sometimes not. One thing is consistent: they never have enough people on the desk when it's time to check out.

The food is a plus-- for Montana, it's very good. As everyone else has said, you absolutely need to make reservations for dinner when you make your room reservations. You'll never get in otherwise.

I also agree with a previous reviewer who mentioned that Chico had become more corporate. They assiduously court small conferences, meetings, and workshops, and these seem to cause the most problems for the front desk. I'd love to hear more from those who've had weddings there-- I was the arranger for one retreat and worked with their "planner", and will never ever have another event there.

  • Liked — Good food, beautiful location, great pool, affordable for many families.
  • Disliked — Isolated locale and activities are expensive.
