We had a fun couple of hours and found some larger sized saphires which we'll have heat treated. They give you a pail of dirt and you have to screen it, then dump it on a table and pick through it looking for the 2nd hardest common stone ( after diamonds).

We did 2 bucketsn at the mine and found many sapphires but no Great find but several that we are having heat treated. We did take them into town to have a Free evaluation as Gem Mountain charges $5. We did a bucket at their in town site the day before and were really disappointed. No body was finding anything at the time we were there that is why we drove out the the mine the next day.

DH and I are both rock geeks, and we spent a happy three hours with big buckets of dirt, panning for raw sapphires. Found some pretty good ones, too!

This shop is perfectly located - in a small Montana town, off the beaten path. We did not sift for stones but I thoroughly enjoyed shopping there. The staff were more than helpful. Though I was a total stranger, they made me feel like I was an old friend. My husband also enjoyed the town in general.

You will get dirty, and the water to wash down the sifter was cold, but it's a lot of fun finding sapphires. It's not cheap and takes time, but if you have any interest in all in rockhounding, or playing like you are an "ole west" prospector, this is the place. The staff was willing to help explain out to get the dirt out and helped to pick out your first find (so you know what to look for). We ended up with 37 carats of sapphires in about two hours and two buckets. BTW bathrooms are on the primitive side. Go to the "mine", don't go to the location in town.
