Howard Johnson Missoula MT
Reviewed October 5, 2012

Learned the Howard Johnson in Missoula was previously Southgate Inn. Not a new Hotel like the Missoula Chamber of Commerce led us to believe(est. 2012). The room was very dingy, musty and smelled of stale cigarettes. Room key stopped working two different times. Bathroom was in disrepair - The light/Heater combo made an awful noise when turned on. The murky brownish green pool had a sign stating it was under repairs. It looked like it hadn't been serviced in years. Maid service only provided towels instead of making the beds and cleaning the room. The guy that checked us in was very nice and friendly.

The windows were nasty, there was a chunk of tile missing from the bathroom floor, the pool was under repairs, and it was very hot out. The guy that helped us was very nice, the bed was okay. I would only stay here again as a last resort.

Room Tip: The cheaper rooms are upstairs it seems.

the room was very dingy and smelled of cigarettes and the bed frame was broken, bathroom in disrepair. i walked away when they said $75 an night, the manager was so desperate i talked him down to $50. which reminds me, in the morning he tried to get me to stay another night for $40. the breakfast was pathetically unhealthy. someone wrote a review on here that there is long term low income residents, which makes since, i remember wondering about some of the cars parked there that looked broken down, and some super sketchy characters hanging around my room. pretty sure they were'nt footing the $75 a night bill.

It looked OK from the outside (typical motel on a typical interstate road) and the office person was nice enough and the rate was OK, but for a smoke free room it stank of stale cigarette smoke. We were too tired to pack up and find somewhere else so we turned on the fan and left the door open for a bit. The place needs a paint job and some art on the walls - even cheesy motel art would be better than bare walls. Haven't had the breakfast yet, but will be happy to head out of here in the morning.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else

I don't know why this is listed as "specialty lodging" instead of a motel, but whatever. Be forewarned -- this has become basically a long-term residential facility for lower income families and charity cases. It's trashed and getting trashier by the day. Stay far, far away.

In all fairness, I have not stayed here, because I live in Missoula, but I see it frequently because of its location.

I can assure you this hotel is not for transients or for low income housing. Our staff is working hard to make this hotel a better stay. We have upgraded all bathrooms getting ready to start changing out the carpet. We do offer a pool with hot tub, hot breakfast and wifi.

Upon arriving after a long drive I found that the pool/jacuzzi were not open which was disappointing. No compensation offered... Hotel is very old and needs work. Carpet stained, AC noisy, found toenail on night stand, continental breakfast very stale, did not see high speed internet in room, did not even waste time looking to see if there was really an exercise room.

I would be frustrated too, all I can say is this is not how we operate our hotels now. We are making changes to the hotel slow but getting done. Bathrooms have been done working on carpet for the room, We do have wifi which covers all the areas but always looking for better ways to ensure better service.
