We had planned to take the train from St. Paul to Glacier but the route was closed due to flooding. We had to quickly make alternative driving plans and we ended up at the Duvall Inn for an overnight. We were surprised and thrilled. The setting is stunning. There is a great hike right outside the door. There is nothing about this place that feels commercial and soulless. It is beautiful and comfortable and warm. We had desperately not wanted an interstate trip where you wake up in the morning at a Hotel 8 to white bread and donuts. Earlene made us crepes in the morning and told us about how she came about purchasing this beautiful property, how she skied out for supplies in the winter. She talked about having built the place with her son and you can feel it has been built by people who care for it. We were just stopping on our way to Glacier but wished we had planned for a longer stay. The wildflowers were gorgeous. The beds were very comfortable. It was perfectly clean and welcoming in every way. The breakfast was delicious. The rooms all have private entrances, so if your not comfortable with the usual bed and breakfast routine, you don't need to pass through someone's living room to get to your space--but if you'd like to have conversation, the opportunity is there. We hadn't considered making Lewistown a destination but the Duvall Inn might convince us to do so. Town is not too far and there are a couple of good places to eat there with fresh ingredients and local produce. There is a gelato shop! We'll be back.
