While we usually stay somewhere in BigFork when we visit Flathead Valley, this trip we had things we had to do near Columbia Falls, Whitefish and Lakeside.

So, we decided on a more central starting point. The Kalispell Grand Hotel was a perfect location. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the hotel rate was reasonable and their breakfast was really good every morning-sitting in the lobby with other guests having coffee and pastries.

The only minor negatives was a lack of closet space in our room and since it was on the front of the hotel there was some weekend evening road noise (and hootin' and hollerin'!).

We really liked the hotel and definitely stay there again on future trips to Kalispell.

We stayed in the Kalispell Grand Hotel in mid August on our way to Glacier National Park. While you can still tell that is is an historic building they have really renovated it well. With just a few compromises for structure (ie no closet in the room but a bar for hanging clothes in an alcove). You can tell that the bathroom has been added but it is not too small. We stayed in a Grand King room and were glad we opted for a little more room. At only $5 more per night, it was a deal.
Downtown Kalispell was certainly quiet. We were there around 5pm on a Saturday, which is when everything closed. We didn't get to venture into what looked like some interesting shops. This seems like it is only a tourist destination Monday to Friday. We had pizza at Moose's Saloon down the street as it was recommended by a friend. At first we didn't think it was open but when we opened the door it was full of people...but dark and a little intimidating. We were glad we went in...pizza was great. The ground sausage covered the whole pie and the beer was COLD! They only take cash and there is no table service. Mostly locals so you know it's good.

Not quite the luxurious period hotel described by all accounts, the public areas are fine but the accommodations are somewhat tired and dated, albeit entirely clean and comfortable. It would appear that little has been done to the building or rooms since the hotel re-opened after its dereliction quite a few years ago. The location of the hotel is good with places to eat and drink and park in the vicinity. There is an issue with noise certainly in rooms on the front of the building, this may not be an issue in Autumn/Winter when the air-conditioners are not 'in-window'. Good value, friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable staff and a pretty good breakfast. Furthermore, at the price it is well worth considering.

WONDERFULLY RESTORED:
We lived in Kalispell in the 1970's and 1980's when the Kalispell Hotel wasn’t quite so grand. WOW - they have done an excellent job restoring this hotel! The lobby is a comfortable place to have your continental breakfast, to sit and read a book, or to chat with staff members or with other guests. The decor in the rooms is a pleasant and understated myriad of soft beige tones.

PERFECT LOCATION:
Most of the large chain hotels are located in a variety of directions just outside of town. They’re all in congested unattractive industrial/retail developments. With the exception of the Red Lion (formerly the Kalispell Center Hotel), the Kalispell Grand is the only hotel within walking distance to all that downtown Kalispell has to offer...

For a hearty breakfast you can walk to Knead Café or Montana Coffee Traders; and for the best dinner anywhere in the USA, Capers restaurant is directly across the street (reservations recommended).

Main Street has a nice selection of art galleries, antique and craft shops, decorator boutiques, and a fine jewelry store. You can easily stroll the tree lined streets and avenues of the East Side, where you’ll find classic examples of late 19th Century architecture, including guided tours of the Conrad Mansion, and be sure to stop by the Hockaday Center For The Arts.

It's also in an easy location to hit the highway for day trips to Glacier National Park.

COMPLETELY CLEAN:
The lobby, the stairways & elevator, hallways, and rooms were all clean and presentable at all times. The housekeeping staff did a thorough job every day.

ABSOLUTELY COMFORTABLE:
We had an absolutely comfortable king size bed, and although our room was on the front corner at 1st & Main Street, we slept quite soundly is spite of the traffic noise.

GENERAL FACTS:
These are just facts, not complaints, so you will not have any certain expectations and be disappointed when you get there...

The rooms are small - the bathrooms have (large) stall showers, no bathtubs - traffic noise in rooms along Main Street may bother some people.

Overall, this is a very clean, comfortable, welcoming place to stay. We hated to leave, but we definitely look forward to our return.

The Kalispell Grand is a fine place to stay as a jumping off place to Glacier National Park. Our room was comfortable and clean and well-maintained. The staff was very friendly. The continental breakfast was excellent, with a wide assortment of food, including home-baked cakes. There's a fantastic restaurant right across the street. Unfortunately the town of Kalispell is dead, there is pretty much nothing there to see or do. So while I would recommend this hotel, I would only use it as a stopping-off place on my way to somewhere else.

We stayed in the family room. The room was nice, the staff were friendly, and the price was OK. But one thing intolerable was the noise. It felt like as if we were standing on a freeway: the walls and windows couldn't filter out any noise. There were cars and trucks passing by throughout the night. It got really bad after 5am when the traffic noise became non-stop. Other rooms at a different site of the building may not have this problem, but I would not go back and risk it.
