For anyone not familiar with Montana's history as a state, the capitol is a good place to visit for an introduction. The booklet provided for the self-guided tour is nicely written. Be sure to visit the House of Representatives chamber to see the massive Charles Russell mural. After visiting the capitol building, we highly recommend a visit to the Montana Historical Society Museum, which is just across the street to the east. There are many excellent exhibits at the museum, including a gallery of Russell's work.
