For anyone not familiar with Montana's history as a state, the capitol is a good place to visit for an introduction. The booklet provided for the self-guided tour is nicely written. Be sure to visit the House of Representatives chamber to see the massive Charles Russell mural. After visiting the capitol building, we highly recommend a visit to the Montana Historical Society Museum, which is just across the street to the east. There are many excellent exhibits at the museum, including a gallery of Russell's work.

We visited the state capitol on a snowy day and it was awesome. We watched the Senate debate a bill for bit. A security guard pointed out some nice vantage points to see the murals on the wall. Very historic building well worth the time to self tour.

Great place to visit. Good story to tell and they do it well. The most beautiful House of Representatives chamber in the nation with the Charles Russell painting mounting one full side of the chamber. Worth a visit just to take in the awesome work by Russell.

When the Capitol was built they used some Tennessee limestone in the construction of the Capitol and it is almost like home!

Highly recommended. No cost. Pretty grounds. Educational experience.

Beautiful inside the building with historical paintings and bright colors everywhere. The tourguide let us in both of the legislative chambers, the former supreme court room, and the halls providing the history of each with passion for all of the areas. The CM Russell painting in the senate is an outstanding piece of art - wish it was in my home!

BEST IF ALL - entry into the building and the hourly tours are FREE, GRATIS, NO CHARGE!

Montana has a beautiful capitol. We took the self-guided tour, which was easy and very well done. Good descriptions of the statuary, art, wonderful frescoes, and stained glass windows in this amazingly restored place. If you are an art lover and a western history aficianado, don't miss a tour of this place.
