“Cheap sleep at a great location”
Reviewed May 28, 2011

This hotel is a good sleep at a cheap price at a great location. Got it on Priceline a few days before and was our planned stop for the night as we headed south with the kids to our holiday location.

Here are the pros and the cons...
Pros:
- Handily located just off the I-15 freeway. Got there less than a minute after exiting the freeway. It was a quiet location: we slept well and heard nothing all night.
- We purchased two rooms (one for the girls and the other for parents and the boys) and the hotel made sure they were right across the hall from each other.
- Good sized, clean room with a good bed. The bathroom had been updated and felt clean. The rug looked updated. Beds were good, no problems there. Furniture also looked updated. The sink is outside the bathroom, but that was ok.
- There was a digital thermostat in the room - always a nice touch
- Decent selection of TV channels and pretty good size TV in our room (27 inch tube TV)... but I always wish one of the channels would be a TV guide. No luck here.
- Nice little fridge in the room.
- Wireless internet was easy to connect to and worked well.
- Continental breakfast provided starting at 6am was included with the price of the room. They provided pre-packaged muffins, yoghurt, toasted bread or bagels, apples, some cereal with milk, apple juice and orange juice, or coffee. You get what you want and then take it back to your room to eat.

Cons:
- The hotel is dated in a number of ways and looks a bit tired in spots, probably the most noticeable in the public areas. The hotel feels like it was built in the 70's and was not built with the public spaces that we have come to expect in newer hotels and motels. The lobby is small and dimly lighted. Hallways feel and smell a bit old. The exterior siding of the hotel looks a bit tired, as does the roofing. Once you get to your room, however, the exterior does not matter. A little freaky to find a telephone installed by the toilet!
- Too bad there is not enough space in the lobby to eat breakfast. All you can do is get your food and then go back to your room to eat it (which means you better get what you want in the first trip unless you want to make multiple trips to the lobby)
- Our TV in the second room was old, small, and did not work, try as we might. It was a 21inch tube TV and would only provide static. We did not complain about it, as we were coming and going so quickly that there was little time for TV watching.
- Rather than getting keys in the form of magnetic striped cards, you get real keys! Just like the olden days! Not exactly the most secure arrangement. The door nobs to all the rooms look old and tired, so these keys could be the same as many years ago.
- A nice touch would have been if the front desk personnel would have worn a uniform of some type rather than jeans and t-shirt; it would have added to the professionalism of the hotel.

Still a very good value if you just want a place to sleep. We arrived too late and left too early to use the pool, which is open 8am to 11pm.

Somewhat dated on some things. Door keys were actual keys not cards but with that being the worst of it, I cant complain much. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable and warm. The pool and hot tub were clean and the sauna and steam room were very inviting and acceptable. However the friendly staff is what made the stay complete. I intend to use this value hot spot again and look forward to it just getting better.

Spent one night here. Room was located in somewhat below ground level wing of property. This would be cold in the winter, just be aware.

Staff friendly at check-in/check-out.

Room was comfortable, Lighting good. Plenty of TV channels. Sink located outside bathroom. Room was clean. Had separate kitchen area (upgraded room) with table, chairs, fridge, stove, sink, etc. Would be very good if spending 3+ nights here!

Breakfast was rather small-coffee/tea, juice, toast, but enough to get started. Location is good, but somewhat difficult to reach when approaching from west due to traffic patterns (not their fault).

Pool/spa were clean. Spa was the smallest I've ever seen in a public place. More like a Japanese onsen for two than a spa, but it relaxed the muscles just as effectively. When the hotel is busy you might have to wait your turn at the spa!

Would stay here again, but would also check out other properties in Helena.

Our group had three rooms at this property for three nights. Everyone enjoyed their stay here. The staff are friendly and accomodating. The rooms are straight out of 1985 but are clean, large and comfortable. All of our rooms had two queen size beds, an apartment style refrigerator, microwave, hair dryers, coffee makers and window mounted but quiet air conditioners. One of our friends did say that pigeons did seem to be roosting in the exterior of her air conditioner and she had to bang the unit to get rid of the pigeons.
A good continental style breakfast if offered in the lobby daily from 6 to 10 AM and includes, juice, milk, excellent rich coffee, oatmeal, breakast muffins and burritos, toast , bagels and a chice of yogurts. This breakfast is prepared by you and then taken to your room on a tray they provided. The breakfast is easily an 8 dollar per person per day value.
While we did not use them the property has a pool, steam and sauna which others guests seem to be enjoying especially those with children.
The rooms are extremely quiet and depending upon where you are located have a good view or a rather poor view e.g. parking lot, electrical installation are the poor views and a view of downtown is the good view. Access to the property from within Helena can be difficult due to Helena's one way streets. Ask the staff for the best access route. Access from the freeway is very easy.
The area has lots of good shopping e.g. groceries, pharmacy, liquor stores and restaurants. Access to all of Helena is easy from the Shilo Inn. There is no charge for parking in their well lit parking lot.
The property is pet friendly and while we do not have pets it seemed like a good place if you have a pet and those guests with a pet did not bother us in any way.
Internet access was easy and dependable - just plug in and surf.
Housekeeping was good in two of the three rooms - in one room they forgot to take the breakfast trays away one day and on another day they forgot to leave soap in the bathroom but in all cases the rooms were cleaned well each day. The Inn uses good linens and towels and the showers are excellent with lots of hot water each morning.
One room had a TV that would not turn on via the remote control. A note had been left by the Inn advising the occupant to turn the TV on manually and then use the remote. This was irritating .
If you do not mind 1980's decor and like a good value then this is the place for you. For the record, we booked on Priceline and got a good deal paying in the low 50's per room per night.

I stayed at the Shilo Inn in Helena, MT, and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. The staff was obliging, courteous, and they answered any little question I had to the best of their abilities. They seemed very knowledgeable about the town and the best places to eat. The room was very clean and accommodating, also the housekeeping kept it looking that way throughout my stay. I was so happy with my stay! Thank you Shilo Inn!

room 216 needs to be fumigated ! I woke up with little red bites on my arms & legs !
they itched like crazy,I went to the doctor when I got home 2 days later ,only to find
out they were bed bug bites! I was in the bed closest to the door..my husband had the
other bed & he didn't seem to be bothered ..
you really need to fix this problem !
I sent this to customer service week ago ..with no response
the front desk lady was a bit rude ..no one would answer the desk phone when I called from my room twice..no wifi..although they said they had it.

We stayed in the Shilo Inn last summer, and thanks to the name your own price feature in Priceline.com we ended up here again. As previous reviews said, the rooms are large and clean. We have never used the pool, but it looks very clean. Yes, it is an old-style place, and I am sure that the continental breakfast will be on the modest side. You just pick up what you want in the lobby, there is no seating area for breakfast. However, each room comes with it`s own table and 2 chairs, fridge, microwave, ironing board and iron. There is no noise transfer from adjoining rooms. All in, a great value.
