Reservations were easy! The sautéed mushrooms drenched in butter were artery-clogging divine.
Plastic table cloths, paper napkins, and styrofoam plate cheapened the ambiance of this charming and historic space. My dinner was very mediocre; I had the seafood skillet with tough and rubbery shrimp and other nuggets of seafood. The corn on the cob had the texture of having sat in a pot of water way too long. It's flavor (or lack there of) complimented the texture which is a shame as we are in the peak of corn season.
The staff were warm and attentive.

Every so often in your travels, you come across a unique place that stands out in every respect. During our trip from Vancouver BC last month we visited the Caretaker's Cabin (Old Miners Dining Club) in Helena MT and enjoyed one such event.
The Caretaker's Cabin, located in Reeders Alley, is a fascinating remnant of Helena's pioneering and mining past. We were seated on the back lawn under sweeping old trees, amongst Montana history, on a warm summer's evening. We selected from a varied menu choosing steak, seafood and chicken dishes all skillfully prepared on the large outdoor barbecue. This wasn't just BBQ fare, rather, delicious meals crafted to take full advantage of the unique characteristics of an outdoor grill.
And then there are the mushrooms! There's only one thing to ask about those mushrooms - how does Jim Sobonya do them?! If you have only one item at Caretaker's Cabin, try the mushrooms!

You can't ask for more friendly and informative staff. They work very hard to make your visit memorable (particularly the numerous hikes up and down the yard bringing your requests).
Caretaker's Cabin serves lunch and dinner, small and large groups and will customize for your event needs. I would recommend calling ahead for reservations and special occasions.
Relax, enjoy the pioneer atmosphere, and savor some of the finest fare in Montana.

Very expensive restaurant in a cute, historical setting. Fun place. Food could have been better, considering the price. My chicken was dry and burned on one side. Corn was cold coming to the table. But, food tasted good. Waitress was friendly and helpful. Loved the restroom and the historical photos.

After walking through Reeder's Alley I decided to eat in Caretaker's Cabin. Very small and quaint. Excellant customer service. Not a very large menu but great food. I had the seafood skillet and it was fantastic and very fresh. Pricey entrees but you get alot of food.

My husband and I traveling from GA just happened upon this gem of a restaurant. The food was great, the service was great. A must if you are in this area. You could not ask for anything more in a restaurant.
