“Hike Mt. Helena!”
Reviewed March 3, 2012

I always take first time visitors on a hike up Mt. Helena, both for the views and for the lovely hike itself. Not to be missed.

“Fantastic views of Helena”
Reviewed February 23, 2012

Mount Helena is a great city park with may different levels of hiking trails for you and your favorite 4 legged friend. Trails are open year round (I think) and I've never done night hiking but it could be really fun. It's a great way to get exercise in our backyard.

“A nice trail walk right in the middle of town”
Reviewed January 16, 2012

It's like they built the town around the little mountain. It's a lovely trail walk part way or to the top. It was very cold, so we only walked for 20 minutes or so, but it was still a nice walk after a full lunch. I've walked to the top in the summer before and it's a good couple of miles I'd say and takes about an hour.

“Great for a quick hike or a day trip”
Reviewed December 27, 2011

Mount Helena is a great place to go hiking, with it's wide variety of trails ranging in difficulty from easy to difficult. You could spend anywhere from an hour to several on or around Mount Helena depending on what trail(s) you take.
Many of the trails from Mount Helena connect with other trails that can lead you down to Davis Gultch and a variety of other places so if it's your first time up the mountain I advise checking a map first. If you start at the parking lot located above Reeder's Alley then there is a trail map posted. If it's your first time up I also advise taking one trail up then another one down so you can see a wide range of views of Helena and the surrounding area.
Of course the top of the mountain provides the best veiw of Helena so be sure to aim for the top but be advised weather in Montana can change quickly so bring a light jacket or rain poncho. Also bring your own water as there are no water along the trails.
Be aware that there will most likely be bikers going up or coming down the trails, though they are supposed to give hikers the right of way it doesn't always happen.
Have a great hike and enjoy the view!
