Owner description: Charlie Russell documented the West that was vanishing before his eyes, telling the story of the American West as no artist had before. Many of the stories Russell told through Russell's art and life resonate even today. The first museum dedicated to Western art, the C.M. Russell Museum houses Charles Marion Russell's original studio, the home where he lived, and many paintings and bronzes created by Russell and his contemporaries. It also includes a compelling exhibition of Browning Firearms, featuring information on John Moses Browning (1855-1926), one of the world's most important and innovative gun makers. Now allowing photography except for specific pieces (no flash photography). Find out why the C.M. Russell Museum is the art and soul of the American West.

“Will have to return for another visit”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

This a great educational location to get out of Montana weather. We stopped in to spend a family afternoon together and stay out of the cold windy weather. Had a great time together exploring some of Montana's history and a great artist. Spent two hours but could have spent two more hours. A recommended stop. Would be great to see more hands on or information for younger aged children to enjoy - had our grandson so had to take turns entertaining him while others could enjoy the displays.

“Beautiful art!”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

This museum has two levels. The upper level displays art from C.M. Russell. There are pictures he drew as a child, through his tenage years, and all the way through adulthood. There is also a small gallery containing firearms. The lower level contains scenes from other artists. There is also a section on Bison, as well as many American Indian displays. The displays were very well set-up. There is also the Log Cabin home where I believe Russel painted many of his pictures. The C.M. Russell home is also onsite, but closed in the winter. This is a great place to spend a few hours.

“Plan on at least two hours - four would be better though”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

From the street it looks tiny but you are seeing the second floor. We spent over an hour on each floor and as mentioned in other reviews we could have spent four easily. We were on a schedule so we couldn't.
Illustrated letters he sent to friends are wonderful. The exhibit on the bison is very well arranged and is anything but boring. Room with clothing is good because it shows the clothing the women, kids, and babies wore, as well as the everyday clothing worn by the men. It does have some fancy clothing worn in combat but most is just your everyday wardrobe. Hollywood never shows that.
The studio and house are next door and are included in the admission. The exhibits by younger artists change so I can only review what's showing now. It was fabulous - and humorous. "Alpaca Lips - NOW!" is a hoot.
If you get tired there is an area in the store where you can sit and relax. This is privately owned and run, so your Nat'l Park passes don't work here. But it's worth the modest admission price. No photography inside but there are some beautiful sculptures around the lawn that you can photograph.
