Owner description: Charlie Russell documented the West that was vanishing before his eyes, telling the story of the American West as no artist had before. Many of the stories Russell told through Russell's art and life resonate even today. The first museum dedicated to Western art, the C.M. Russell Museum houses Charles Marion Russell's original studio, the home where he lived, and many paintings and bronzes created by Russell and his contemporaries. It also includes a compelling exhibition of Browning Firearms, featuring information on John Moses Browning (1855-1926), one of the world's most important and innovative gun makers. Now allowing photography except for specific pieces (no flash photography). Find out why the C.M. Russell Museum is the art and soul of the American West.

Spend time browsing in the museum at the impressive art collection, or wander through the buffalo exhibit in the basement. The House is interesting to see. The studio is amazing. Be prepared to be on your feet. There's also a really fun shop to buy cool momentos.

“Lots to see!”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

I visited during an Art Weekend, which was great because there were free seminars offered in the downstairs of the museum; I sat in on an artist painting an oil canvas with a live cowboy model; the artist shared his process and gave advice.

There was a silent auction happening upstairs, some of the pieces being bid were amazing.. and with a very big price tag!

There is a gun collection displaying a lot of Brown's work, he had a lot of patents and changed things in the gun world.

CMRussell is quite the Montana legend, behind the museum is a log cabin which houses his actual studio. A lot of what was there was CMR's work, but also a lot of other artists' work that would be sold int he auction later that night. The museum also has quite a bit of Native American artifacts.

All the displays were great, definitely didn't think I would spend 3 hours in there, but I did, there was that much to look at! Very Interesting place!

This museum is well worth the visit!! We were fortunate enough to have visited on a free admission weekend. The exhibits were fabulous and our teenage boys learned a lot!

“Must go!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

If you are into western art, drawings, paintings, exhibits, statues and the such, you've owe it to yourself to go!
Even though they were gearing up for their annual auction and half the museum was "off limits," it was still more than worth the time to go there.
I'm only rating 4 out of 5 due to half the museum being "off limits" due to the auction - my own personal experience and, I want to note, I was informed of prior to buying my (very inexpensive) admission ticket at 1/2 price (because of the auction).
