Located inside the Gallatin Gateway Inn in Gallatin Gateway, MT (near Bozeman, MT), this is a great place to dine, year-round! The chef's seasonal menu has something for everyone. Friendly, timely service is often missing from Montana & Wyoming restaurants---but not here :) Rod White was perfectly professional, always appearing at exactly the right moment, and he was friendly, which we very much appreciate (after experiencing less-than-friendly service elsewhere in MT & WY). And then there's the food---which is excellent! The flavors, the presentation, the freshness---we were very pleased with our choices, which included: New England Clam Chowder, Forest Mushrooms, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Regina's Torte (a hazelnut & chocolate ice cream layered delight), fresh, homemade bread, and a Scottish Ale that was so smooth, we nearly ordered seconds (and we don't drink much)! Open for dinner from 5-9 p.m., reservations are recommended during the height of tourist season, but don't let that stop you---The Porter House is not to be missed if you are anywhere near Bozeman, MT.

Few restaurants in the Bozeman area can match the Porter House for its gracious atmosphere, excellent food, and outstanding service. I was with a party of four for dinner at the Porter House last Saturday night. There is just nothing else in the area that can match the historic elegance of walking into the grand foyer of the Gallating Gateway Inn. The restaurant itself has a warm, quiet ambience that invites unhurried conversation with friends.

The service was perfect. Knowledgable and attentive. We tried three of the entres on the menu and each one was very good and beautifully presented. My wife and I look forward to going back to the Porter House whenever we are celebrating a special occassion or have guests that we want to treat to one of the area's top dining experiences.

A great restaurant in an historic setting. The quiet ambience, warm decor, amiable service, excellently prepared food and reasonable prices made our tenth anniversary dinner a memorable one. It is our "go to" place for special celebrations from now on.

I have lived in the Bozeman area for 15 years and there is no place that comes even close to the Porter House in the state! Great service, almost never crowded, and the food is EXCELLENT!

It's really a shame that Gallatin Gateway Inn doesn't do more marketing for this quaint little restaurant, because it's uniquely Montanan and deserves the attention. The Inn itself is a great example of 20th century Spanish-style architecture, originally built for rail travelers. It's stately and grand, and inside, unlike modern restaurants or inns. The restaurant is set back in its own cozy area off the entry (much better than the original dining area, which is perfect for weddings and brunches but cavernous for dining), there are a few tables and one very popular bar at which you will find an assortment of locals and visitors alike. (If you're lucky, Mac -- a local fly-fishing guide -- will be your bartender). If you go in summer, request a table outside to watch the sun set over the green pastoral hills to the east. Management has changed hands a few times and service will at times reflect such bumpy transitions. The last time I went, the host made a nasty remark about our not having made reservations even though there were 10 available tables, and the server was sadly inept and uninformed as to the menu (hence the 4 stars). Hopefully with the new management, such kinks have been worked out. The food itself is consistently high-quality and rivals anything you might find in Bozeman proper without the pretense. A starter might be Warm Spinach Salad, Dungeness Crab Cake, a soup for $6, or the hedonistic Hazelnut Triple Cream Brie with Huckleberry and Raspberry Puree. You came to Montana for meat and specialties abound: Bison Rib Eye, Muscovy Duck with Cherry Sauce (my favorite), the requisite steaks, trout or lamb. On the less expensive side, the fish and chips and burger are on the appetizer menu and are excellent ($10). Dessert might be a Chocolate Mousse Trio or cheesecake. I really hope the new owners bring it on to get people in here -- it's a special place and they need our support! I could really see live music working in this venue, too: jazz, guitar, classical, etc. so people linger by the fireplace and chat with a hot toddy in hand. Here's hoping!
