For our first dude ranch experience I picked this one as the best in Montana based on a ton of research, with the most important criteria being the physical Marlboro commercial-worthy beauty of the ranch and its authenticity both in people and 'get away from it all' location. It exceeded expectation. It is 6th generation Montana family owned, who spend time with guests like they are family friends; unlike almost all ranches it is away from the highway so you are in a massive flat valley surrounded by tall mountains and never see a car the whole week; the cabins are like in a movie and we hung out on our rocking chairs on our veranda and watched the sky; and the quality of the other guests, staff, and horses was amazing. We are very novice riders but the horses were so perfectly trained that we could do mountain trails and go for hours in stunning scenery with no effort. Came back home completely refreshed after great food, magnificent outdoors, exercise, and tons of time to read books and relax. We are bringing our two kids and coming back next year! And we usually vacation internationally and almost never repeat a vacation spot!!!

Room Tip: We loved Murphy which was most conveniently located, had the best view, was away from other cabins...

The trip advisor reviews are so on par with our recent experiences at Nine quarter Circle ranch. My daughter is an avid rider, my husband a fly fishing enthusiast, and I like to relax and enjoy nature. The ranch is within 45 minutes to Yellowstone so this was a perfect choice.
We flew into SLC, Utah and drove through the Tetons; spending 2 days in the park. West Yellowstone is the closes park entrance to the ranch. Taking the more direct route through Idaho back took us only 5.5hours.
Many of the reviews are so detailed; I thought I would address some experiences or advise that wasn’t shared:
The riding and open trails are magnificent, take advantage of EVERY ride that is offered. If you can, make sure you see Wapiti valley and mirror lake. These were our favorite and most memorable rides. Another guest summed it up perfectly; you would be hard pressed to find another riding experience where you only saw pristine landscapes that are completely untouched by any development. Coming from California, this is unheard of!
Enjoy getting to know the guest and employees. All the wranglers were enthusiastically equally enthralled by the beauty of the landscape, rivers, lakes, and animal life. They shared riding tips and fun stories.
The pond is perfect place to end the evening and practice fly fishing.
The over night or day trips are for the more serious riders; i.e. think camping without amenities.
It is difficult to take photo’s rides as you have to stop and pull out a camera. I had one for the ride and a good one for all the other times.
Dinner’s meals are split between kids and adults. Also, most of the dinners there is pre assigned sitting; so you may not be sitting next to a guest you have bonded with.
Happy hour is NOT for kids, you will get be asked to leave if kids are in tow.
Treats and drinks are in the dining room most of the day. Happy hour is in the office and you can store any drinks you bring in that fridge.
Don’t expect too much with the accommodations, but I consider myself picky and I was comfortable.
Don’t miss any of the fun events the ranch has set up; especially the square dance. The square dance was an absolute blast; I can’t remember when I laughed that hard.
Don’t expect that your kids will always have others staying there at their age bracket. For part of our trip my daughter was by herself; luckily the terrific staff kept her company part of time.
Tips to make your trip more enjoyable:
Take riding lessons before you arrive; it will greatly benefit any soreness or potential mishaps that might arise.
Don’t say you are an intermediate rider, but haven’t ridden in years. That will hold back other riders and potentially hurt you.
Don’t miss a meal, they are fabulous! The kitchen will prepare or wrap up meals for guests who miss the sit downs.
My daughter is already begging me to return, so we hope to enjoy the beautiful facilities again.

Room Tip: We had two rooms for the three of us so we had plenty of room

This was a dream come true trip for my husband and I. Three of our passions, quilting, horses & fly fishing all wrapped up into one fantastic week. Cozy cabins, 5 star meals, well trained responsive horses, serene streams and quilting with two fantastic teachers. Definitely would recommend this trip to anyone and hope to go back soon.

If you are looking for a place to get away from it all - this is it. Beautiful scenery, fantastic food, friendly hosts, cozy log cabins.... and horses too!

I attended the Quilter's Retreat 2013 and can't think of a single thing that would have made the trip better for me. Thank you!

Nine Quarter Circle Ranch has been doing it right for all of the fifty years I have been vacationing there. Fabulous horse rides through the most beautiful country! A pack trip if you like. Fly fishing that challenges the best. A fun little rodeo at the end of the week where we all apply the horsemanship we have learned, if we like. A retro square dance the last night. Anb fabulous meals. Ride, fish, hike, mountain bike, or just read. One of the top three family trips we have found, with children at any age. Everyone in the family has something fun to do. My parents started taking us to this ranch and we never had to look for another ranch again. Now we are on our third generation of happy ranch goers.

Room Tip: All of the rustic cabins are fantastic, with hand made quilts, knotty pine paneling, and a small woo...

NQCR has been our family's favorite vacation spot for over 15 years. We first went there in 1995 with two children under two years old. Our most recent visit was with four children ages 20 to 12. Regardless of the ages, for both children and adults alike the experience could not have been better. The Kelsey's are great hosts, the food is delicious the other guests are wonderful and the riding and scenery spectacular.

We'll be going back soon and we can't wait!
