“Great Coffee-Great Bakery-Great Sandwiches”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2012

We were travelling to Fort Benton, MT to see the Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center, and missed lunch by stopping and gawking at the Missoui River along the way. Cruising the town near the Lewis and Clark Memorial, we noticed the Wake Cup Coffee (Shop) and Bakery, with people coming out of it. It is on FRONT Street, parallel to the Missouri River, near the Mandan keelboat.

Eureka!! It was cold and blustery, and an afternoon cup of coffee was just the ticket.

When we got inside, there are two immediately noticable things - 1) the smell of fresh baked goods was absolutely sinful and the coffee smell only added to the effect, and 2) what a great looking and spacious place! The entrance is small, but the bakery/restaurant expands nicely inside, with spacious seating and local artwork displayed throughout.

We tried different sandwich plate combinations. My buddy said "You're ordering a reuben, in Montana?" under some mistaken presumption that you can only get such a sandwich in NYC
(He's a midwest-upper south guy. I forgive him his foibles...). Well, the cook, Alex, must have apprenticed at Battery Park, or the Lower East Side, because it was superb. Both meals were absolutely delicious.

We slowed down. There may have been "miles to go" before nightfall, but the late lunch was so delightful that we took the opportunity to pull out the Fort Benton pamphlets, and plan the rest of our afternoon, while I enjoyed a second, and then a second-and-a-half cup of coffee.

The store front is in an alcove of surrounding stores/offices, but is clearly marked at the end
of Front Street - with most of the commercial activitiy (and a "casino"/grill at the other end of
Front Street, which is the main street at Ft Benton.

We didn't take any baked goods along with us, which I regretted later, when an unexpected snowstorm make travelling to Bozeman MT an adventure. This place goes on the short list
of unexpected pleasures and great discoveries while traveling.
