Jax Cafe was a superb discovery for dinner in Eureka. The menu was surprisingly varied ( chef trained in Italy) and creative. I was craving a change up from beef and the Green Curry bowl with Prawns and mango hit the mark with tangy flavors and a visual treat. The serving was too much for me but it did not disappoint. This place has local charm, casual vibe and a menu that will surprise you . The owners have a great formula for success as evidenced by the popularity of the Cafe.

Driving along the scenic Lake Koocanusa Byway, we find ourselves hungry for breakfast around 8:30 in the morning and are attracted by the cute sign of Café Jax in Eureka.

That’s where the attraction ends. One hour and 15 minutes later, when we finally leave the Café, we are severely disappointed and frustrated. Yes, I know, we are in North Western Montana, I know people mostly care about fishing and outdoors here, I make allowances for that, but still…

Everything is just wrong here: it takes half an hour to get somebody to pay attention to us, all personnel clearly lacks training, understanding, any skills needed to be in the service industry and two orders of what is basically 2 scrambled eggs end up costing almost $20. My “scrambled egg whites with a fresh tomato sliced on the side” is not only met with disgust from our waitress, “what, no meat?!”, but when they finally show up they are quite yellow and accompanied by greasy hash browns. The requested dry whole wheat toast is dripping with butter and the milk for the coffee is actually cream. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky, because an out of town couple we found sitting there ahead of us was only getting to order when we were leaving.

This place should make its mind: does it want to be modern and cool (they do offer espresso and latte) or does it want to be old fashioned and telling stories about “those born before 1945” (nothing wrong with this either). Only, whatever they choose, they better do it with some amount of professional skills and care for the customer. Otherwise, they will be gone not before long, just like the hardware store they replaced...

We have eaten here frequently when we lived closer, unfortunately, we always arrived at peak times. This cafe is worth the wait for good food and good service. This time we arrived early in the morning to find complimentary mini muffins and the old curmudgeons having their morning coffee. The French Toast special was wonderful. And you can never go wrong with the 3 items for $4 side menu if you are in a hurry. Fabulous as always and really enjoyed a more relaxed, less busy time for breakfast.

We have eaten at Jax 3 times now and twice out of the three we have had to wait a fair bit of time to receive our meal, but it was absolutely worth it each time.

The staff are friendly and attentive (BUT BUSY!), the atmosphere is laid back, old diner style and the patio is quaint with herbs and tomato plants growing beside the tables. Once they had a hillbilly band playing which was fun!

The food... oh the food..... like I said in the title. It is worth the wait! Their Mediterranean pasta is so yummy and you get so.much.food!! I have only ever been able to eat half of their pasta dishes at one sitting, even when famished to begin with. TONS of flavour in their meals.

Most recently we ate breakfast there on a busy saturday morning. It was about 1.5 hrs all told but the food came out fresh and piping hot when it did come. Don't go when you are in a hurry. But if you are down for vacation take the time to have a few cups of coffee and enjoy the western hospitality and farm fresh meals that they prepare by hand. You won't regret it.

I live in Eureka and have visited Cafe Jax at least seven times. On every occasion, I've received extremely poor service. Several times, after sitting at the table for 15 or more minutes, we had to go up to the counter to ask a waitress come and to take our order. Another time, the waitress never came. We walked out. Getting the bill at the end of the meal presents the same problem. Once you get a waitress to take your order, the wait time for the meal to be delivered is very long. Your drinks come in a reasonable amount of time but by the time the meal comes - you need to order another. The food is okay, nothing special. The cafe claims it has Wi-Fi service but in fact, does not. Service is consistently bad. After giving it seven chances, I have decided not to go to this restaurant anymore. Try the Powderhorn Cafe across the street. MUCH better food and service.
