“An acceptable Motel in a remote location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2014

We visited the Alpine Motel in February when the snow was deep and cold. There was only one road into Cooke City as the road out was closed by snow. We described its location as beyond the back of beyond. Any review must take this into account. If you want to stay in Cooke City in mid-winter, and that in itself is an experience, then this is as good a place to stay as you can get. You eat in one or other of the small cafes or bistros very near the hotel. The rooms are basic but clean and warm.

This is a great place to stay in Cooke City. The rooms are very clean and spacious and the prices are very reasonable. There is no cell phone service in Cooke City, which is perfect, so you can enjoy the beautiful views out your motel room. The owners also own the Bistro, which has food that would rival a fancy restaurant in a big city. Cooke City is a great little place to spend the night after a long day in Yellowstone.

My aunt and I stay here last summer. It was just what I wanted in a small rustic designed interior style hotel. Everything was clean!! The room was spacious. They has the most cute comforters on the bed. The room had no bad odors which was huge to me for a older motel. It was perfect I would defiantly stay here again.

On recommendations from Dutch friends, we stayed here to spend time in the Lamar Valley, and we weren't disappointed. Comfortable bed and very clean accommodation, and a good reception on arrival. The owners also run the Bistro nearby, and we were very pleasantly surprised by the variety and quality of the meals for a town so far from a ready supply of meat and groceries. The only negative, was the relatively thin walls which gave little respite when the keen wildlife watchers in the adjoining room got up before dawn. So we just did the same thing - and were well rewarded for our efforts !

Have stayed here several times as well as the Super 8 and Soda Butte and the Alpine is the best place to stay in Cooke City, MT. First you have to remember this is Cooke City and that keeping a place running and staffed well up here is a challenge. The Alpine has consistently provided clean and comfortable rooms with free WiFi, coffee pot, microwave and fridge. This may not sounds like a lot, but in Cooke City, this is luxury.

The Alpine has ample off highway parking, a BBQ for guest use and many rooms have been renovated with some newer updates within the last few years. Also, just across the street from the Miner Saloon.

Room Tip: Rooms A1 and A2 are on the upper level and offer two bedrooms.

The gentleman who manages this hotel also owns a good restaurant in town, and knows how to provide service. A forgetful sort, I have too much experience leaving various bits in my path. My wife and I came across Alpine while on a cross country road trip. I cannot say enough about the kindness and thoughtfulness of the proprietor of this hotel, and the attentiveness of his staff.

If you are looking for a comfortable place where you are made to feel welcome in a frontier town, i would whole-heartedly suggest you book the Alpine when you are coming to Yellowstone through this most beautiful of entrances.

First major stop on THE BEST ROAD TRIP EVER!!! We traveled from our home in CT to Yellowstone NP, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Cooke City was our first long term stop. This is a great place to stay in order to enter the NorthEast entrance of the Park. Literally 5 minutes away. We had what amounted to a 2 br. condo at the Alpine and it was nice. Definitely a little frayed around the edges (not 5 star by any means but don't think anything is in this town) but clean and convenient. Slept our family of five very nicely. The owner/staff we're very nice and honored the quoted rate. They did not have an iron so bring your own. Beautiful scenery.

Just a word of advice. In planning for the trip we used the printed Yahoo Maps and a GPS for directions... we came in via Beartooth MT. Up until we got around 100 miles to Cooke City, MT the directions coincided with one another. When we noticed that they did not we decided to go with the GPS. Big mistake. In order to get to Cooke City you either have to come in through YP or Beartooth MT. No other way. But Yahoo directed us so that we only would have to go through Beartooth MT for about 13 miles, the GPS took us from the top to the bottom so basically 60 plus miles on a winding, narrow high scary and dark road (it was approaching dusk). Signs saying watch out for wild animals. Roads with gates saying if they are closed go back. What!!?? A 60 mile trip took about 2 hrs. because of the road conditions. Sometimes down to 20 mph. Very scary. You go from a wide open road to this hellish ascent/descent. Very beautiful scenery and if I had been prepared it might have been a different experience for me but I had no idea. So anyway keep this in mind especially if you are afraid of heights.
