Though it's an older property, we were pleasantly surprised. I wasn't too sure when we checked in but don't be dissuaded, this is a treasure in disguise. First, the rooms are so roomy that they are suite-like. Frig, microwave, large flat screen TV and brand new pillow-top mattresses. The shampoo, soaps and toiletries were also wonderful.

The War Bonnet is upgrading, perhaps slowly, but several rooms had workmen in them painting and sprucing up. All for an inexpensive price. What a value for what you get.

Now to the breakfast buffet!! Nothing like any of the chains we frequent. The sausages were divine, plus eggs, cold meats, waffles - you name - it they had it. Dinner was very good as well, with specialities the invented by the chef.

No, this isn't a chain, it may be a little long-of-tooth but the plusses outweighed the negatives and we will stay at the War Bonnet again (as our family has done for over 30 years). That says a great deal.

The staff was accommodating and friendly and went out of their way to help and greet us by name.

Don't pass this up!!

Nice pool area and breakfast, but the rooms are dumpy.
The first two rooms we were given on the second floor down near the end smelled really bad. Both were supposedly non-smoking rooms. One smelled very musty and the other very smokey. Hard to convert rooms that were once smoking rooms to non-smoking. The one smelled so bad of smoke that we needed to get a new room. The overall appearance of the hotel rooms and hallways are in much need of remodelling.

My teenage daughter and I spent a night at the War Bonnet for a BB Tourny. The room was less than satisfactory, windows were so filthy you could barely see out of them, bedspreads didn't fit thre beds (they hung on the floor), hair in the bathroom, non smoking room reeked of cigarettes, water temp in shower could be set to icy cold or scalding hot nothing in between. There was nothing positive about our stay in this establishment, I would not recommend staying here this hotel should not even be ranked as a one star.

Before reserving two rooms for two nights, I was a little scared about the past negative reviews about this hotel. After staying here though, I would have to say that the poor reviews don't really give the hotel enough credit.
The location is just on the north side of the freeway near most of Butte's hotels. The outside looks basic and has plenty of parking. Not a lot in the way of landscaping, but it was also Winter when we stayed.
The lobby is surprisingly quite nice and comfortable. The clerks at the front desk were friendly and very accommodating. Vicki, the front desk manager, is extremely nice and willing to make everyone's stay enjoyable. She even placed nice gift baskets in our room for us! She is a great asset to the hotel!
We were assigned rooms 166 and 168, both with two queen beds. After checking into 168, we asked to be moved as the window was broken and would not lock and the heater didn't work well. We were then moved to 160 just a few doors away. Not a problem at all. The only difference was that the new room had the standard mattresses, not the pillow top, (both quite comfortable though) and did not have a refrigerator in the room. Not an issue at all for us.
Both rooms were very spacious on today's standards and had nice calm colors and wood furnishings. One flick of a switch turned on all the lights so you did not have to stumble around to find them. The bathrooms are quite small, but served the purpose. The only real downfall with the rooms was that housekeeping needed to be a little more thorough in their cleaning including vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom floors. Other than that, the rooms are very comfortable. One note though, WiFi is not available in the rooms, only an Ethernet connection is available with cords available at the front desk.
The housekeepers are quite friendly and were not hesitant to say hi or Merry Christmas in the hallways.
Just off of the lobby is their breakfast room that also serves as the restaurant in the evenings. Breakfast was great and included the following (as much as I can remember): Hard boiled eggs, yogurt, whole and cut fruit, sausage, biscuits and gravy, French toast, scrambled eggs, cereals, waffles, pastries and muffins, apple and orange juice, coffee and milk. We were very happy with the breakfast and the ladies that stock it are very pleasant and do a great job.
There is also a small lounge off the lobby and next to the restaurant. My dad used it during our stay and said the bartender was very nice.
Just down the hall off the lobby is the indoor pool, spa, fitness room, and sauna. I have to say that it is a very nice pool area, but since we only used it during the evening, it was VERY dark. The lighting they have is not sufficient for such a large area and seeing the bottom of the pool was not possible. The area around the spa could have been a little cleaner too as we saw pizza crusts nearby for the whole stay. Not at all a big deal, the pool area was still very nice. One other comment though was that the spa had a little too much chlorine in it.
My only real concern about the property is that it is showing its age and could use a major face lift. Outside could use some landscaping and nicer curb appeal. The halls are probably the area that shows it the most with dinged door frames, peeling wallpaper, and carpets that need to be replaced and/or shampooed. After talking with Vicki at the front desk, it sounds like they have plans to do some renovations pretty soon. This would improve the property a lot as it does need it. This is NOT to say that the property is a slum, it just needs some work to bring it up to today's standards.
Overall, it is a very comfortable, average hotel. Rating it a 3/5 I feel might be a little low, but unfortunately 3.5 isn't an option. Their website says that it is "The Best Hotel in Historic Butte Montana". Well, I believe that with the staff that they have, but the property still needs a face lift to match other competitors nearby. I still recommend the hotel if you need a basic place to stay and can get a good rate. The staff and owners are truly trying to improve the place and I feel that their effort can certainly put it in the "Best Hotel" category soon.
Thank you for everything Vicki!

We arrived late into butte airport and were picked up immediately by a friendly employee, when we got to the hotel the gal at the desk had us all set up as we had called from the airport for our ride, she told us about the breakfast buffet and freshly made lemonade and also that someone would take us to the airport in the morning to get a car for our travels to Dillon to see my daughter ( who recommended us here).
I was looking for a nice cold drink of juice after we got settled in and the man who picked us up gladly went to the kitchen for some with ice. We surely were treated like royalty. The room and bed were very nice, bathroom extremly clean and lots of hot water in the shower. Would have loved to take a swim but it was too late. We will gladly stay here again while visiting my daughter. many thanks to all

The Service I expierenced at the hotel was wonderful. I stayed at the hotel for a family wedding and I was amazed at how kind the staff was to us. We ate breakfast in the dining room and received very prompt service. The food was wonderful. We had a poolside gathering prior to the wedding and the food and atmosphere was excellent as well. All of the staff had the tables and food prepared prior to us arriving. We then spent the night chatting in the quaint lounge with family and friends. The bar tender even went outside to check on us while on the patio at times. The room was clean and the complementary paper good not be beat. Please stay at this wonderful hotel. The service is great. Thanks so much.
