Owner description: "Our Lady of the Rockies", a 90-foot statue sitting atop the Continental Divide is the result of a dream and six years of hard work. With the help of generous donations and a wealth of love and faith, countless volunteers completed a seemingly impossible task. On December 29, 1985 "Our Lady" was placed on the East Ridge to overlook Butte, Montana. The base sits at an elevation of 8510 feet above sea level and 3500 feet above the mile high city of Butte. The statue, lighted and visible at night, is a spectacular sight to behold.

We spent the morning and took the bus tour up the mountain. This is the only way to go as the road is private. The cost is minimal and it takes about 2 hours to do the tour. The road is very scary as it is an old unpaved road that goes up the side of the mountain. The school bus that took us up was packed and our driver was very funny so we really enjoyed the tour. Obviously the site and the tour have a religious undertone but that didn't bother us at all as we were prepared for it.

This is a great story of how this project got started - be sure to listen to the tour movie even if you don't go on the tour to the mountain. It's truly a story of the Butte people and how they stick together and work together!

This is a "must see" if you visit Butte, regardless of your religious beliefs. The story of the building of it is quite amazing, and seeing the monument is really amazing. One of our guides was both a longtime miner and he helped build the monument. He commented that, down in the mines, the Unions reign, and if he tried to do the job of a different union, he would be in real trouble. However, the same group of guys working as volunteers on the monument, they would all do any job as necessary to move the project forward.

Well worth your time and money.

Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it. graven image (here meaning a carved wooden image), the standing image (meaning a sacred pillar), the image of stone ( a sculptured stone idol), are the three forms of images . The expression, to bow down unto (or towards) it, forbids worshipping before an image as well as worshipping an image. this is an abomination to God.
