I grew up in Butte so this is nothing new to me but it always fascinates people that we have taken there. Be sure to ask about the dog - they have a statue of him at the Plaza Inn Mall. There you can check out the carousel horses - beautiful!

The Berkeley Pit is a large body of water at the base of an open pit mine. (There is a small fee to walk thru a small tunnel to the observation deck.) However, the story behind the water makes it interesting. When the mine closed, they stopped pumping water out of it...and it is slowly growing. However, this water is extremely toxic and will eventually get to a level where it will overflow into the town. Theoretically, Butte is getting ready for that moment (5-10 years from now) by getting pumps ready to lower the water...let's hope those pumps work! (but where the heck are they going to pump the water to?).

The west has many spots like this one. I last visited the Berkeley Pit about 30 years ago. It was interesting to see it again. However, the Lavender Pit in Bisbee (Arizona), for example - is much more visually attractive. (Wearing my environmental geoscientist hat gives me mixed thoughts about open pit mines in general..)

Butte has a very rich mining history. Many of the attractions in the area are mining related, The Berkeley Pit is a good example. There is a lot to learn here, and a lot to see. Listen to the recordings that tell you about the history of the pit, if you have a tour guide ask about what they are doing to fix the mess to the environment that has been created. A lot to learn in one little place.

This used to be a great attraction while operating. It's a mile deep but is now full of high acid water. The efforts at remediation are interesting.
