“Fascination of the abomination”
Review of Berkeley Pit

A bizarre and troubling view of the horrendous Berkeley Pit. The woman who sold us tickets in the (terrible) gift shop told us stories about what long & thriving old ages all of her relatives (and their pets) enjoyed living near the pit, but it's hard to believe anything that toxic and huge can sit in the middle of a town.... can't really wrap your mind around it, but glad we drove out there for a look-see.

If you are coming to Butte or just passing through, you must make a stop at the Berkeley Pit. It only takes a few minutes to walk through the tunnel and out onto the platform. It's not a beautiful landmark, but more of a historical perspective of the mining history of this little town. You can read about the clean up that is underway and how the prospect of copper turned this sleepy little MT town into a booming meca of the West with almost 90,000 citizens at the turn of the century. Well worth the 10 minutes and $2 fee.

This is a must see. You only need fifteen minutes to see this. There are pictures and information when you get to the pit. It is close to the parking lot and there are no steps. Cost is $2. You can't fully understand what takes place here without seeing this. It is a few minute drive from downtown Butte. Posted by grinandbrakeit

This is an important part of Butte history. You can draw your own conclusions about providing work for the miners, about the need for cheap copper, about the dangers to the environment. Or you can go "Wow, look at the size of that thing." I went wow. If you go to Anaconda you can see the slag heaps that this operation produces. It's only two dollars and the view of the mining operation is worth it. But there is not much else there.

This was a quick stop that was well worth the time and minor admission fee. The information displayed about the pit was interesting and helpful.
