Owner description: The World Museum of Mining is one of the few museums in the world located on an actual mine yard, the Orphan Girl. Explore more than 50 structures, ranging from the 100 ft high headframe to the many buildings of Hell Roarin' Gulch, a turn of the century mining town. Displays and exhibits focus on mining and the related culture that made Butte, MT. The World Museum of Mining offers two underground mine tours that take you into the depths of the Orphan Girl mine. The 65 ft tour is a glimpse of the underground and takes about an hour. The 100 ft tour provides more history, gives visitors the opportunity to see the Orphan Girl vein and is approximately 1.5 hours long. Get fitted with a miner's hard hat and cap lamp to experience life underground! Space is limited and reservations are recommended. The World Museum of Mining is open daily at 9:00 am April - October with limited hours in November. From time to time weather conditions affect our ability to offer all available services.

Visited the museum today and was very impressed! Took an underground tour and it was just the three of us. Our tour guide (forgot his name!) was really knowledgeable as he was in the mining industry so he could answer every question asked. Put on a hard hat with light and a belt to hold the battery pack and went down into the mine. He showed us mining tools, different types of ore carts and the chippy/main shaft. It's pretty cool down there so you may want to wear a sweatshirt. It was really neat and would highly recommend a visit!

This is two separate attractions in one place. You can pay for entrance to the museum, or you can also pay for a tour of an underground mine. (I presume you can just do the mine, but am not sure). The museum is a reconstructed mining town, about 20 or so buildings. In most cases you cannot enter the building, or enter only a foyer, then view the inside through windows. Not great, but still quite interesting. There are also 40 or so items around the field: snow tractors, head frames, various mining equipment, etc. Oh, and the hoist room for a very large head frame.

We also went on the underground tour. No spoiler on how they got us into the mine, but inside the guide discussed the various aspects of how mining works, showed a variety of pieces of equipment. None of the equipment is actually operating, but it was interesting nonetheless.

I have toured other mines that were more interesting, primarily because some of the equipment was operating, but this one was not bad.

Both of these are worth the time and money.

Mick should be everyone's guide underground. He has so many stories to tell. I have been in other underground mine tours and none have been like this. Fabulous!

I expect the real gem of this place is the underground tour - which I missed (travelling with claustrophobic friends). The above ground portion is mostly Ye Ole Western town replica. Gift shop building includes a large doll collection with several sets of TV and movie collections. I've never seen dolls from Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, James Bond, comic book characters, Babylon 5, and Flash Gordon -- much less all in one place. Weird, eclectic outfit - but if you don't visit the underground portion don't expect as much of a mining focus.

We had visited this museum in the past, but recently we were disappointed with the stat of this museum. Buildings which in the past had been we'll maintain we're treated as junk. For example, the inside of the church looked like a yard sale for junk dealers.

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to review the World Museum of Mining. I appreciate your feedback as it helps us to make improvements to our facility and our guest experiences! A few years back, the museum developed a strategic planning document to address repairs around the museum campus and I am proud to report we are making significant strides. We hope you will visit the next time you are in Butte to check our progress!
