Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Open April thru October, the World Museum of Mining is one of the few museums in the world located on an actual mine yard - the Orphan Girl. This 44 acre museum exhibits more than a century of American history and brings it to life. Explore more than 50 structures, ranging from the 100 ft high headframe to the many buildings of Hell Roarin' Gulch, a turn of the century mining town. Our displays and exhibits focus on mining and the related culture and ethnic groups that made Butte, MT their home. The World Museum of Mining offers two underground mine tous that take you into the depths of the Orphan Girl mine. The 65 ft tour is a glimpse of the underground and takes about an hour. The 100 ft tour gives more history and gives visitors the opportunity to see the Orphan Girl vein. The 100 ft tour takes approximately 1.5 hours. Get fitted with a miner's hard hat, cap lamp and battery belt to experience life underground! Space is limited and reservations are recommended. The World Museum of Mining is open daily at 9:00 am April - October. From time to time weather conditions affect our ability to offer all available services.

“Take the underground tour”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

If you like adventure take the underground tour. Be prepared to wear a hard hat. The temperature is about 50 degrees so you may want to bring a jacket. It was interesting being down there and hearing about the miners. This was not very deep or too closed in so those who may have claustophobia should still be able to enjoy the visit.

“Must see for a Mining Buff.”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

The museum, which is located on the west side of uptown Butte, is on the site of the Orphan Girl mine, and the headframe (Gallows frame) is in place over the shaft. The sheave wheels are in place as is the draw works. The central part of the tour is the draw works building with exhibits on the main floor including the "dry room," and the oirginal motors and cables, and air compressors. There are also museum quality displays in the basement. You can walk all around the headframe and adjacent ore handling buildings, and see mining equipment of all types including man skips, ore cars and engines, muckers, irregularly displayed. They have also built a fairly extensive old town on the site with original buildings which include quality displays and exhibits. The only downside here is that you can only peer in the windows of these buildings. There is also a decent gift store on site with books and collectables. There is a lot for a mining buff to see scattered all around the large property, and not necessariy well organized, so bring an explorer's attitude. Wear your comfortable walking shoes and plan to spend about 2 hours.

“It's not Disney World...but was interesting.”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

It's a Mining Museum and Tour. Yes you will see old interesting things from the mining era. If that is what you are interested in, you will enjoy this. You MUST take the tour or it is not worth your time going. I agree with a past review that the display of dolls has nothing to do with mining and is a bit creepy. My children enjoyed looking in the windows and seeing the display's. Their attention span lasted about 45 minutes. (Ages 10 & 12) We also did the tour which we all enjoyed. I am not sure that younger children would enjoy being in a confined space. Last, but not least, the employees were super friendly and helpful.

Great place to learn about Butte and the mining community. Good place to get some exercise on a nice day, the walk around should take about an hour and half. Would suggest to all locals and visitors.

“Nothing fancy but fun”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

Its just an eclectic mix of fun things and you can see a tipple up close and the machinery that it took to operate the mine since it is located at the site of a real underground mind. Great mineral collection and its old town while brought in is still very realistic.
