Finally! A restaurant in Bozeman with a real chef who cares about good food and is willing to put in the time and effort to make it. Yes, making your own homemade bread is hard work. But, instead of buying from one of the bakeries in town like everyone else, Blackbird makes their own, everyday. And that bread, cooked in their wood-fired brick oven is some of the best I've ever had. Try it with the homemade burrata (a softer, creamier fresh mozz) and drizzled with olive oil. Heaven.

Yes, it's a little pricey for a small town, but this small town isn't used to having good food and paying for it, so don't be fooled by the other reviews here. In a place where people bemoan paying $8 for a burger, they're of course going to complain about $18 for pasta. But, that pasta is good! Try the lasagna at Blackbird - it won't disappoint.

First time I have ever been to this place. I found the menu to be very limited, only about 8-10 selections, and all were priced VERY high. My bf and I ended up splitting a large chop salad with walnuts, goat cheese, and a light tangy dressing. It was very tasty, and fresh. We also then split the lasanga with sugo and bechemel sauce and some kind of meat (we think it was lamb sausage). It was very creamy, filling, appealing, and flavorful. Everyone at the table split the bread and olive oil/balsamic vinegar. The bread is made in-house, but they didn't even warm it up. We did have really good service, and our waitress was friendly. Blackbird has a nice atmosphere, and the restrooms were clean. I would not go back simply because of the high prices and small portions. I honestly don't recommend even trying it once - it was good, but you won't miss out on anything if you skip it.

Blackbird Kitchen is like a movie set. The setting is perfect and obviously created by someone who has great style and a vision for a beautiful space. The eating area is actually smaller than the open kitchen which boasts a wood fired oven and racks of great wines that they offer by the bottle and the glass. We arrived full of anticipation - we've heard such great things about their food and their local philosophy. What we found, however, was that more thought had been given to the space than the customers. We ordered the bread (amazing - and served with a far too shallow bowl of fruity olive oil and balsamic - we had to ask for more as generous portions are not the norm here) and I had an excellent (puny) glass of house Malbec. And the, we waited OVER AN HOUR for three single serve pizzas. We ran out of water (served by the stylish bottle - but empty for over 30 minutes), were not asked if we required more wine and given no explanation for the delay. When we arrived there were plenty of empty tables - we watched as newly arrived guests were served but we sat at an empty table. We had a great view of the kitchen and observed a very casual staff - the chef who was pulling pizza dough meandered around talking with other staff as she s l o w l y pulled the dough - it seemed as though there was none of the urgency that I'd normally associate with a professional kitchen. We finally decided to pay for our bread and wine and leave - we were told that the pizzas "just went in" and that we should wait. We decided to get our pizzas to go - only to wait for another 15 minutes for their delivery. We were comped the pizzas but eating them in the car en route to our destination was disappointing. Don't get me wrong - the food was GREAT but the customer service experience left a lot to be desired. We were not expecting "fast food" - in fact, we were more than happy to wait for quality - but the time required was totally out of expected range. After being there for 2 hours and 10 minutes we left wishing that they'd pay as much attention to service as they had paid to their lovely space. It's about balance and this place doesn't seem to have achieved it.

Would I return? Not right away but I would give them one more try in the hopes that the service standards rise to their food/decor standards. Let's hope they can get their act together and give Bozeman a great option for casual fine dining.

After enjoying this new restaurant in Bozeman numerous times in the last year I won't go back to an establishment that has raised it's wine prices to the point where the least expensive red is $35 and a $15 carafe of house wine turns out to be 1/2 a carafe size at most . Food is still good but prices have continued to climb beyond their value.
