Arrived late and thought I had made a mistake in booking at lst sight in the dark.
The "motel" is an older motel in the center of town that has been extremely well-maintained! Carpets, all linens, bathrooms and adjoining restaurant were spotless. Comfortable bed and pillows. We found the reception desk to be extremely helpful. Ask for a 2d floor room with the vaulted ceilings. This is a typical 1940s-50s 2-story motel that provides partial payment of taxi ride from the airport (we paid $4 of the $10 fare in City Cab.) Gave the cab driver a $3 tip and he looked surprised and said it was not necessary. We told him it was. We just needed a place to sleep for the night before heading out. We paid $58 and had cleaner and nicer accomodations than some we have paid triple price. Breakfast not included but great and reasonable in restaurant at motel. Staying in a motel that reflects the laid-back west and not the usual chain was a delightful departure in this instance.

What a fantastic find! Built in 1949, during one of the "peaks" in Billings' colorful history, this place feels like a visit to a bygone era.
With one of the most comfortable beds ever, great Montana hospitality, and an on-site restaurant that makes everything from scratch, you cannot go wrong here!

we pulled into Billings about 2am and I had had a bad feeling all day because of the terrible reviews I'd read here- lemme tell you, we were VERY pleasantly surprised when we got there.
it's VERY themed- way overdone Western, but that's part of the charm.
no, it's not brand new, but it's clean and comfy, and the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful.
we saw no transients, druggies or drunks- in fact, we were the youngest patrons we saw, and we're in our fifties
I HIGHLY recommend the Dude Rancher Lodge to anyone who's tired of chain motels that look like the styrofoam boxes fast food comes in.

As this guest mentioned, we're WAY WESTERN! That's because we've tried to keep things as authentic as possible! Built by area ranchers in 1949, our charm is a result of the western theme. Actually, we're more like an Inn than a hotel - a home away from home.

The Dude Rancher is an old, dated motel. It's great location - you can pretty much walk to anyplace worth walking to in downtown Billings - and good price outweigh any negatives. I stayed there three nights, and while the room wasn't immaculate, the bed was comfortable and the room clean. The people at the desk are friendly, and the breakfast in the restaurant is good.

Our thanks to this traveler for an open, honest review of our property. Located in the heart of downtown, we are within walking distance to local venues, clubs and activities. Many of our business clients stay due to our close proximity to area companies.

Billings is a very poor city and is full of drugs and homeless people, everyone would be better to stay at a larger chain with security and higher standards. Room was filthy and smelly, housekeeping was rude and lazy.

Could not step out side the room to smoke or stroll around without constantly being asked for money and cigarettes, hotel was a hangout for housekeeping and there friends, I guess housekeeping got a discount for staying there and each had a ton of people hanging around.

My company paid per diem and 2 weeks was all I could stand, I paid the extra and stayed a couple of exits away at the holiday Inn.

We're extremely concerned that this guest perceived Billings to be a very poor city, "drugs and homeless" Our Chamber of Commerce could and would highly disagree backed with data of large conventions and national awards of "best places to live". Also, the perception that our hotel is run by drunks and druggies as stated in the heading of the review borders on slander. Admittedly, we had staff turnover in July of 2008, which resulted in problems with housekeeping. We would ask future guests to review our most recent reviews, as this post is 17 months old. We apologize for not responding at the time of this review.

when i arrived the check-in lady was very nice and i was given my room, when i got up there it hadnt been cleaned so i went and told her so she gave me another which was nice as i could park my car outside the door.

unfortunatly the room wasnt very clean with spiderwebs everywhere and i dont think the carpet had ever been cleaned ! so i made sure i allways had some footwear on.

on the plus side it is very close to all the shops and restaurants

given the oppertunity i would not stay here again.

I read the reviews actually on our way to Montana, and though they were not very good my husband and I took a chance, because of the convient downtown location. I was very surprised when we checked in. The manager was very polite and helpful. we were treated wonderfully. The decor of the rooms is western and the furniture is real pine. The hotel does have some age on it but the beds were firm and the TV's were up to date. Maybe they did some replacing after reading the reviews. Anyway I will return to The Dude Rancher and I do recommend it to my family who have come to visit us.
