Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Pictograph Cave State Park is a National Historic Landmark known for its importance to Northern Plains Archaeology. Come learn about the rock art and artifacts found here dating thousands of years old. This 23 acre park features walking trails, stunning scenery, a green-design visitor's center, picnic grounds, museum displays, everything you need for a fun and educational visit! The site is well-known for its' spirit writing. Soluble minerals leach through the sandstone veiling the rock art, but when the wall becomes wet on rare instances, that veil of minerals will lift (becomes transparent) revealing what is hidden beneath. On a dry day you may see 5-9 pictographs, but on the brief, wet occurrences, 10-15 more images may appear in better detail. The Crow people believe that many of these images are drawn by the spirits, and whichever ones you see are meant to give you a personal message or even foretell future events.

Go to the visitor center first to see what the caves used to look like. Although the cave was interesting, it was disappointing not to see very much since the drawings have faded greatly.

It's hard to believe this is so close to Billings. When you are at the park, you truly feel like you are in the middle of the wilderness. While some of the pictographs are hard to see, you can still art created hundreds of years ago. Also, even though many have faded, you gain more of an appreciation for conservation and maintaining them for the future. The area is scenic and there are picnic tables and a couple of fire pits, too. Some of the paths are kind of steep, something to keep in mind if you have trouble moving around.

We visited a couple of times. There are walking paths that I can get around on (have a muscular disease), have a park ranger there during some of the day in the summer months. Kids of all ages learned a lot and had a good time seeing the history of the area. Only draw back: sometimes there are rattle snakes.
