We’d avoided eating at Red Lobster for a few years because of high prices and mediocre food and service (a combination that spells “poor value” to us) the last time we’d been there. But, some friends had recently told us about their great lunch specials, so, during a day of shopping, we stopped in at the Red Lobster. The décor was pleasantly nautical (as most Red Lobsters, I imagine) with pleasant and comfortable dark furniture. We were warmly greeted by our server, and were brought a basket of hot-from-the-oven cheddar bay biscuits. I’d forgotten about those, and they were definitely yummy. On to the menu, it was nice to have a tough time making a choice, because there were so many great options. Ultimately, the wood-grilled tilapia tacos, on the $7.99 lunch special grabbed me, and Michael got the crunchy fish sandwich. My lunch was extremely good, with fresh fish, cabbage, cilantro, tomatoes, corn tortillas and a little drizzle of sauce on the three tacos that arrived. It was complemented with a nice and tasty wild rice dish. Michael’s fish was similarly good, and arrived piping hot. I think the server missed an opportunity in not offering us a dessert (we might have split one), and just bringing the bill to the table when it appeared we were done. Of course, we certainly could have asked, but it just showed a lack of salesmanship.
One negative and in-general pet peeve for us – there were no prices on the drinks or the beer. Sometimes we will have a beer for lunch. We also enjoy margaritas, but our experience where the prices are not listed is (1) the drinks are very over-priced, and the restaurant is embarrassed (?) not to post them, or (2) we’ll ask the server the price, and s/he doesn’t know – because they just punch in the order at the POS, and, really, it’s been a tedious process (at other restaurants anyway) to find out the price of a drink.
But, back to Red Lobster. We will definitely be returning to try out some of the other lunch specials – and oh, the garlic and white wine mussels. Those seemed real appealing, and smelled wonderful, when the table next to us ordered them. But, we won’t be ordering drinks (unless you start to post your prices).
