“Incredible food, average staff”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

We visited on a Wednesday evening without booking a table. We were welcomed by the barman who was very helpful. Good selection of real ales to choose from. The menu wasn't massive but everything sounded delicious and we were still spoilt for choice. We ordered quickly but there was a 45 minute wait for food which we weren't warned about and seemed excessive for 2 meals considering it wasn't that busy. However, when the food arrived, the wait seemed irrelevant! It was delicious! Generous portions, well presented and beautiful flavours! Easily one of the best meals we've had and definitely topped our expectations. The only downside was the staff. There was one scruffy waitress who clearly did not want to be there and the poor barman was taking orders, taking food out and serving at the bar. We will be back but hopefully we'll have time for dessert and slightly friendlier service!

“Fantastic Panoramic Views”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Fortunately we telephoned to book a table at this establishment as it was fairly full, however, the food was delicious, we had a carvery with a choice of beef, pork or turkey, my husband had the pork, I had some beef and pork, I personally found the beef a little tough but the pork just melted in the mouth. There was an extremely good choice of veggies, i.e. carrots, peas, parsnips, cabbage, brocoli bake and mediterranean mixed veg and you could help yourself to whatever you wanted and there was sources on a side table. The Dining Room was quite packed but for people who came in but didnt have a table booked were not disappointed as they had plenty of tables outside, although it was a little windy the views were absolutely breathtaking. We will certainly be back

“Too mean to heat the restaurant”
Reviewed April 13, 2013

We have just arrived home after having lunch at Winyards Gap. In the corner was a lovely wood burning stove but they were either too lazy or too mean to light it! It was a miserable cold wet day today and everyone was sitting in the pub in their coats and scarves, we couldn't finish our meal quickly enough to get home and defrost. The barman was in a t.shirt but as he was rushing around and in and out of the kitchen no doubt he never looked at his clientel and realised everyone else was freezing. We returned because a few weeks ago four of us went for lunch and it was cozy with the fire blazing away, needless to say they had different staff working on that occasion. Heating should be geared for the customers not the staff,

“family sunday lunch”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Booked our family for lunch to celebrate a birthday. Good size car park with a good view across to the west. Brilliant when the sun was shining. Pub was of a good size with plenty of room for our party of 16. Carvery was very good with good size portions and good selection. Drinks were reasonably priced (certainly compared to Reading in Berkshire). Staff were helpful and unobtrusive but there when you needed them.
