Cobblestone Lodge
Reviewed May 31, 2009

If you are looking to recharge and have some fun, Cobblestone Lodge is it. I took my whole family this past week and it was great. They have planned activities all day that you can join in on, or you can just take it easy at your cabin or at the heated pool. I don't know what the other person is talking about with the beware comment and "don't ask for extras." We got everything we asked for and more. Our waitress was a gem. The owners are good, friendly people. On our first night i sat in the hot tub while everyone watched some Merry Melodies cartoons on the big screen outside. Later in the week everyone watched Wall-E. The Lodge mixes the old with the new which i loved. The adults got reacquainted with some oldies but goodies and the kids were happily introduced. Take the kids, plan on being social and easy going, and have a good time.

My husband and I took our teenaged grandkids and our daughter to Cobblestone last summer. We are returning again in 2009 with our whole family the rest of our family. I cannot imagine anyone not liking this place. It is true, the cabins ae not the Ritz, but bear in mind these are cabins. If you are looking for plush, then try another place. The cabin we stayed in was more than sufficient. We were in there to sleep, shower, and then we were out of there. The price is good. We have compared to other lodges where everything is separate. The float crew is great. You will never have to help load, unload canoes. They do it all. The pool is nice and the hot tub which is for adults only is nice and always very clean. The food is just plain old country food, but our teenages liked it and that is pretty good. We already have booked our 2009 trip and the family cannot wait to get there.

Our extended family has visited Cobblestone twice and I would recommend it to people looking for lots of varied activity, family time, and all-inclusive meals.

The cabins are very small and not super clean, but they are sufficient. There is an a.m. and p.m. activity every day and a late evening (8-9 pm) activity, as well: horseshoes, card games, shuffleboard, talent show, hayride, volleyball, etc. During busy weeks they have one or two daily crafts for children. There is an a.m. and p.m. canoe or raft launch (provided enough people sign up).

Meals are served at a specific time by a very friendly staff member (they all seemed very friendly!) and they will accomodate your needs (they are happy to store your special needs like milk or cereal until the next day). The food is mediocre in my opinion, but there is plenty of it!

Overall, we returned because there was plenty of interesting activity for our family age range from 2 years - 70 years! Playgrounds, pool, and so many group activities. If you are looking for china plates and crystal stemware, move on. If you are low-maintenance and want some old-fashioned fun, try Cobblestone.

We went there for Memerial Day weekend. Got there on Friday afternoon. Our cabin wasn't ready yet even though there wasn't many people there yet. So we went into town and got some supplies for our 2yr daughter.

Once we got back we settled in. It was kind of run down. There was lots of dead leaves from the season before. The pool was dirty with some leaves in it. The trampline did not have any coverage over the springs. Which having kids you know is dangerous! The mini golf is HILLY and the carpet that is on the green is ripped from being so old!

The food was OK at best... One morning they served eggs over easy and I HATE runny eggs. I asked for them to make me and my daughter some scrabbled and they refused. I didn't even up eatting anything that morning and felt sick the rest of the day.

We floated only one day and asked for a raft. They were very friendly about giving it to us since we had a toddler and didn't think a canone was a good idea with her. We ended up waiting for over a hour to come and get us at the end of the float.

My husband and son tubed the next day and had a blast. It isn't a GREAT value for your money. For the whole weekend trip for Memerial Day it cost us $785!!!! For a family of 4. And they charged us for our daughter also! I thought that was INSANE! She didn't hardly eat and we brought our own pack and play.

We stayed at Cobblestone Lodge last week and my family loved it! The hosts are extremely pleasant and the other guests were very outgoing and friendly, and quite entertaining! Although the accommodations are a bit rustic (old furniture, window air conditioning units, etc.) the atmosphere itself was wonderful. There are no TV's or computers, yet you don't even notice because there is always something to do there. We could float on the Meremac twice a day, which is included in the price of your stay. It is a short float...approximately 2 miles or so. There is also an innertube float which is maybe a 1/2 mile and it is very relaxing and fun! The pool was nice and the hot tub really helped when my husband threw his back out in a game of softball in the middle of the week! There is a lot for the kids to do, and a lot of other kids for them to make friends with! And I've never laughed so hard when we joined in the square dancing! Many late evenings were spent in the gazebo playing a game of cards or Scrabble, and the mornings were spent playing in tournaments like Shuffleboard, Bocce Ball, or Washers! Even the meals were tasty and it seemed like we were constantly hearing the bell ring for dinner time because the week went by so quickly. And if you didn't like what they served, they had a salad bar to satisfy your hunger. 3 meals a day, planned entertainment, and the ability to let your kids have fun while you relax all week long? What a bargain! We will definitely be returning next year!

I have gone to Cobblestone for years. I love the ambience and old-time feeling. The original owner was a tap-dancer in New York. Boy, could she entertain us! Her grandson now runs the lodge. If you want a get-away, with no TV or computer this is the place to go. Beautiful woods, simple lifestyle. I go every year when possible to paint. The cabins have a small screened in porch and everything smells like the woods! Just down in Steelville are horses to rent/ride.

Food is family style, but not much fruit so I suggest you take (or buy) your own orange juice, etc.

Movie night still consists of "Mr. McGoo" from a 16mm projector shown on a white sheet! Just couldn't be better than this. So if you are looking for something different and back to the basics, I delifintely recommend this place. It is only 1 of 3 left in the U.S.

Blessings. Tina Wright, MSEd.

We thought it would be quaint and fun, but it was not a pleasant experience.
They advertise as providing canoeing and tubing and rafting on the Meramac river - but this was very limited. Plus there was only one large raft. The canoes were very old and ours had a small leak. They would not allow you to take the inner tubes down to their access to the river unless it was the designated float time.

The accomodations had extremely old furniture and they were small cabins.
They had a nice large one for bigger families- but wouldn't allow us to change even though it was not going to be rented out until the day we left!
Our cabin leaked and had obvious water damage, but they acted as if it was the first time.

The food was plentiful, but very standard - family style. Soda and snacks were extra. The game room things like the pool table and pinball cost extra.

The staff was polite, but not willing to be very flexible.
Not a repeat for us... But some of the other folks have visited this lodge for years... They had much younger children too. Our kids were 11 to 17.
