“My favorite weekend breakfast in Springfield”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

You might have to wait. This place is popular and the dining room is small and intimate so you may have to wait for a table. Still it's worth it.

I recommend the Biscuits and Gravy and the coffee, but the menu is large and wide. The wait staff is friendly. I think cash is preferred, this place belongs on that show Drive-in's, Diners and Dives. Great place for breakfast or brunch with friends.

The only problem is they are usually closed on Mondays.

“One of the only restaurants I will drink coffee from”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

Some of the best coffee in Springfield, and the food is wonderful too. Worth getting up early for it is only open to serve Breakfast and Lunch. The owner used to come in and serve coffee himself, but I'm not sure if he still does this after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“Must Have Been Decent in the Past -- But is so No More”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

Anton's reputation for a good breakfast could not have been derived from the quality of food they now serve -- which is extremely poor. The food looked right but none of it tasted good. My best guess is the cook who earned all of the earlier good reviews no longer works for Anton's. Absolutely any other breakfast would beat this one. Shoney's is much better, cheaper, and all you can eat. I left Anton's hungry and dissatisfied.

“An Oasis in the Restaurant Desert”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

This statement on the Café’s T-Shirt is an accurate description of Anton’s, a mom and pop restaurant that has been in business 38 years. This is a wonderful place for breakfast. The eggs are perfectly cooked: 1) scrambled eggs are creamy and moist; 2) if you want eggs basted soft, that is exactly what you get. The slightly crisp hash browns are different from anything you have experienced before. The potatoes are boiled, then finely shredded in a meat grinder. The biscuits and gravy are made from scratch and have a nice balance between milk and flour, with just a touch of salt. My wife loved the “bottomless” coffee and her creamy grits topped with butter. If you enjoy omelets, there are thirty-two listed on the menu—or they will build one from your own selection of fresh ingredients (there is an extra charge for substitutions). Finally, the service is friendly, cheerful, and helpful. Anton’s is very busy on weekends, with lines out the door. Obviously people consider it worth the wait. If you want a quiet breakfast, go around 9:00 AM weekdays (closed on Tuesdays). Visit on Wednesdays and meet the 81 year-old-owner, Anton. You will enjoy the experience. Be sure and bring cash.

“Excellent coffee... so-so dessert.”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

We stopped here to waste some time and escape the noisy Jimmy John's where we had just had lunch. The place is quaint... lots of old stuff hanging from the ceilings and a huge collection of restaurant menus hanging all over the walls. It could use a update, but it is interesting nonetheless. We all ordered decaf coffee, it was made fresh and was one of the best cups of coffee I've had in a long time. If I had stopped at the coffee I'd have rated Anton's a 4, but no.. I had to order a slice of banana cream pie. The pie was slightly frozen with chunks of banana.. very strange with a odd texture to the 'cream' part. The whipped topping on the top of the pie was reminiscent of the super cheap frozen pies you buy at the grocery store. I love pie, but couldn't finish this slice. My father also ordered a piece and he thought it was good. So drink the coffee... and flip a coin to decide if you want to order dessert.
