Hotel Bothwell, an Ascend Collection hotel

This is a fabulous hotel in historic Sedalia. We traveled to Sedalia to enjoy the State Fair and stayed at the Bothwell. Our room was comfortable, clean, fresh, and very charming. Our bed was so comfortable and the room was quiet. Plenty of soaps, shampoos, and extras included in the room. Breakfast was ok and the reason for less than 5 stars, just waffles and bagels. And the space it is served in is small. If we had not been in a hurry we likely would have skipped it and found some place in town to have breakfast. There is a bar/restaurant open for dinner that we did not experience. It is unfortunate they do not offer breakfast. The staff is very friendly and it was obvious they cared about their guests and providing exceptional customer service. We will definitely return to stay at the Hotel Bothwell again.

I'm from a big city and am very used to being waited on hand and foot at big fancy hotels - so when my boyfriend and I went to Sedalia, MO this past weekend we stayed at Hotel Bothwell and were pleasantly surprised. Even though the area doesn't have MUCH to offer, this hotel sure does. The rooms were nice and tidy and the staff was friendly. The historical charm of this building is so great, and not something you see very much of anymore. We were in a King suite with 2 full bathrooms which was a great amount of space. The bed was very comfortable, and anything we could have asked for was already provided in the room complimentary. This hotel cares about their guests and how they are treated. The general manager Alex is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and because of his professionalism and control of the hotel, we will definitely make the drive back! Definitely a must!

I have now stayed at the Bothwell three times, twice driving out of my way and adding time to my business travel in exchange for the pleasure of spending the night in this remarkable hotel. With a restoration (a series of them, apparently) that has left the place feeling authentically preserved without a whiff of retro-cynicism or clueless kitsch, the Bothwell represents a rare and gorgeous example of a large 1920s-1930s small-city hotel with all its parts working, from "fine" restaurant to coffee shop to lounge to ballroom to ancient elevator. Updates and contemporary amenities are appropriate but do not detract from the ambience. Rooms are lovely and varied and if you accept the vagaries of antique plumbing you'll enjoy them. Staff are local, helpful, friendly, and make up for occasional uncertainties by taking extra steps to ensure satisfaction. Add the Scott Joplin Museum on site, resident ghosts (I had a harmless visitation myself - thrilling!), and a location on the square that looks like a movie set-piece and you'll understand how special the Bothwell is. It is my favorite hotel in the area.

My stay was thoroughly enjoyable. Check in was eased by personable staff who had an attitude of graciousness and efficiency. Strolling the lobby with it's faithful restoration to the 1920's era reminded me of childhood visits to my parents' home town. The Courthouse square is similarly preserved with numerous statues and commemorative plaques. The room was a double-queen, of ample size and a seating area conducive to sharing a meal and much laughter. Sleep was like floating on a cloud once I realized it is best to sleep in the center (the bed is pouffy) and to use the sham for my pillow (since the pillows were tall and unyielding -- my only complaint). Sleep was easy and undisturbed. Other guests were nearby, but not heard. Breakfast was sufficient and the apples were crisp and delicious. My friend and I plan to return, bringing additional coworkers.

Room Tip: A double queen room is spacious and a great choice for staying with a friend.

We spent 2 nights here after having trouble finding a room anywhere else during a busy weekend in Sedalia. We were so glad we did. We had a king room which was 2 rooms combined into one. There was a sleeper loveseat and the room was spacious. We loved the fact that there was 1 1/2 bathrooms in the room. The bed was very comfy! The room wasn't well soundproofed(not unusual for an old building), so I would recommend bring a fan for white noise at night. The breakfast was so-so, but it was better than going out. We took a walk around the downtown and really enjoyed it. Even though it was downtown, you could get anywhere in Sedalia pretty quickly. We really enjoyed the old-fashioned atmosphere.

Kudos to the Bothwell and general manager, Alex Whelchel for running such an efficient and pleasant establishment. Alex helped plan and execute a wonderful surprise party for a 50th birthday. Also, the food was excellent; thanks to Chef Todd.
We had family of various ages with various needs arriving from all over the country…they were all treated with great deference, like royalty . Alex is personable, paid close attention to all details we discussed, and I am grateful for his excellent service. Our family would stay again at the Bothwell.

Room Tip: Boutique hotel with quaint charm. Rooms are not all the same.

Hotel Bothwell was our 1st nights stay after biking the Katy Trail (starting in Clinton). It is just a few blocks from the restored Sedalia train depot station, and the staff was very accomodating to bikers (permitted our bikes in the lobby area, storing / retrieving them for us, etc.). My accomodation was a deluxe king room on the 5th floor and was surprisingly large. There was a half bath upon entering, a very short hallway to the main room, containing a king bed, couch, writting desk, armoire w/ TV, closet and then a full bath. The bed was very comfortable and overall the room was very quiet. Like many hotels, ice machines are on every other floor, so I needed to go up or down a floor for ice.

There was a popcorn machine in the lobby that makes [free] theater style popcorn which was a nice little snack in the afternoon. There was also a comfortable (but relatively small) seating area in the lobby. Since the Ivory Key bar and the Ivory Grill restaraunt are both closed on Mondays, we had to find other dining options in town.

Breakfast was included w/ the room however it is very much a budget hotel style continental breakfast - toast, cereals, a belgum waffle iron, orange & apple juice dispensers, paper plates, plastic forks, etc.

Overall, this was a nice hotel that has many [restored] luxury touches from 1 to 2 generations ago. It was conveniently located (from a trail riding perspective) and was an enjoyable experience overall.
