Owner description: Wet a line at one of the Midwest’s premier trout-fishing destinations at Montauk State Park. Located an easy ride from St. Louis, the park’s waters are stocked each night from an on-site hatchery. Want more than day of fishing? Stay overnight at the park’s motel, campground or cabins. Want to do something other than fish? Montauk State Park’s hiking trails will take you in and around the scenic Pigeon Creek basin.

It's easy to pull up your RV and camp, or get a cabin. But a one day trip costs only $3 for a tag and the fishing is great. I will always love fishing here.

Montauk State Park is one of the most scenic places in the Missouri Ozarks. Here the headwaters of Current River begin at a few small springs. A daily put and take trout fishery exists for those who love to catch their dinner. Modern campgrounds, cabins, a motel and park store and an excellent restaurant make Montauk the ideal location for a day away or a week long stay. Superb hiking trails lead explorers into the back country where they may see deer, wild turkey and a variety of songbirds. Spring is a superb time to photograph colorful wildflowers. And don't forget to check the park calendar for one of the many special events held there each year.

The trout fishing is excellent. The lodge staff is friendly and accomodations decent. The food at lodge wasn't the best but ok. If a person is to rent a cabin in one of the four plex's make sure you get 2nd story rooms because the ground floor are way to noisy if someone is above you.

Overall one must consider this is a State Park and not a hotel chain.

What can I say other than I have returned to this park every October for the past 21 years for a wonderful trout fishing experience. Please know that the park offers more than just trout fishing like excellent hiking trails, bird watching (including a nesting pair of eagles), a working grist mill, a playground for the kids, and plenty of space for picnicking!

The campground offers both primitive and electric sites and features heated bathroom, showers, and laundry facilities.

Visiting the park is free but fishing does require a Missouri Fishing license as well as a daily trout tag.

My first trip to Montauk was as a kid in 1977. I re-discovered it after college and have been back multiple times every year since. The fishing is usually good, but not like some "fish in a barrel" outfit. The stock every night, based on how many tags were bought on that day the year before, so there are always fish in the stream, based on how many people are there. Every morning, they blow a siren, which signals when fishing can begin that morning. Be out there before the siren and ready to cast, and you have a great chance at a fish, regardless of your skill level. After the first 20 minutes, or so, skill becomes an increasing factor throughout the day. The stream is crowded most of the time, with the good places being shoulder to shoulder in the mornings at the siren. If this isn't your type of fishing, then this might not be the place for you, as frustration can easily set in if you start getting tangled every cast and someone across from you is catching them left and right and you aren't. The average fish is 13-14" and every once in a while, they throw in a "lunker" of over 3 pounds. If you catch a lunker, you get a patch and your name on the "Lunker Board." Not every fish is caught every day, so there are always fish to be caught, even in the afternoon, if you know where to look.

The cabins are OK, but no TV. They have smaller sleeping cabins, with no kitchen, or larger ones with kitchens. Every cabin has a grill. They have condos and a couple bigger cabins that have TV with Direct TV, plus they have hotel like rooms in the lodge that are small, but will work. If you are looking for the Ritz Carlton, these aren't for you, but fishing probably isn't your thing anyway. The lodge has a restaurant with a breakfast and dinner buffet on the weekend. I love Montauk! It is by far the best place in Missouri to trout fish.
