Owner description: Wet a line at one of the Midwest’s premier trout-fishing destinations at Montauk State Park. Located an easy ride from St. Louis, the park’s waters are stocked each night from an on-site hatchery. Want more than day of fishing? Stay overnight at the park’s motel, campground or cabins. Want to do something other than fish? Montauk State Park’s hiking trails will take you in and around the scenic Pigeon Creek basin.

The family time is priceless here. No TVs in the cabins foster more family togetherness playing board games, etc. after the bell rings in the evening. The fishing is great and the scenery is breath taking. The lodge is quaint and the food is really good. They will cook your catch! We come twice a year and will continue to return.

Good luck at the restaurant.
Unique experience for our granddaughter.
For a quarter we bought fish food and watched her shine.

Montauk is a great place, so beautiful in the fall, and has so much to offer. We RV camp with family and friends, and have a number of relatives and friends who rent cabins for the extended weekend and stay. The lodge is great, and has a little dining counter with ice cream and meals for CHEAP prices, great stuff too!

Everything you need is at the lodge, whether for fishing or camping, and a one day tag and license for fishing is $10 per person, which is very cheap for as well as the trout in the Current River are usually biting!

The shower and bathroom facilities are the nicest of any campground we have ever been to, everything is very well maintained, and the campground is quiet, mostly families, so there are never loud parties going on to late hours of the night. People are here to fish and visit and have fun, which makes it a great atmosphere for everyone!

The fishing is usually very good. We come here at least twice a year, early summer and mid-fall, and both times here are just beautiful. We have never had a bad time here, its well worth the trip!!

“Great fishing, campground OK”
Reviewed September 5, 2011

Considering this park is literally in the middle of nowhere, you would think more of the campsites would be available for reservation. There are some, but not nearly enough to warrant a long drive to chance getting a spot, particularly on a weekend. The few sites that are reservable book up 6 months to the date of arrival for holidays. One day late, and you will be staying somewhere else.

As far as the campground goes, it is very convenient to the stream for fishing. That said, it is way down in a valley, and always damp. Even on spectacularly clear, warm days, it is cool and damp down in the campground (we have been here many times). On weekends, and during the week in summer, there are programs in the amphitheater, the same ones repeated over and over year in and year out, but hey, at least there is something. You can visit the mill when it is open, but the last time we were there it was in serious need of repair and was bordering on dangerous...looked as if it hadn't been cleaned in years.

Overall, we like the fishing here; yes, they stock the stream nightly, so it is a bit easier to catch fish, but the water runs very clear and those fish are smart, so it's not always as easy as it may seem!
