Days Inn Downtown St. Louis
Ranked #99 of 123 Hotels in Saint Louis
Reviewed July 17, 2012

This place was seriously the worst motel I've ever had the misfortune of visiting. I don't know if it's the Days Inn itself, or if it's just this one location. It's in the middle of a shady neighborhood. There's a sex shop right next to this place, there's a bunch of homeless people roaming the parking lot, and the staff was extremely rude. The entire building smelled of chlorine due to the indoor pool in the lobby.

Room Tip: Make sure it's not facing the parking lot, not near the pool, not in the space between the door...

I have no complaints at all for the hotel. It was relatively close to downtown, offered a good price, clean rooms, nice continental breakfast, free parking, and is overall a pretty new building. The only downside is that it isn't in the best neighborhood. The staff was also very friendly.

Neighborhood and Safety:
Scary area, even for this solo-traveling Detroit gal. Boarded up and abandoned buildings. 24 hr porn shop two blocks away. Homeless people coming in the lobby asking to crash. Industrial area, nothing nearby (other than porn shop ...).

Access/Egress:
Could not get OUT of the area without traveling through surface streets (and urban blight), stopping at every corner for a stop sign. Can get OFF the highway to the area, but cannot get out efficiently. I had to travel to midtown every day, using surface streets.

General cleanliness:
While hotel is rather new, the wear/tear shows. Dirty walls, soiled upholstery/carpet, and plastic protectors under the bottom sheet on the bed. To their credit, my dirty carpet was shampooed my last day of stay, but couldn't this have waited until after I left!? I don't like knowing someone spent an extended amount of time in my room. Also, as far as safety, I slipped and slided every time I walked into tile bathroom with my wet shoes from the damp floor. The odor and humidity in the room were also oppressive when I returned the day of the cleaning - I turned on the shower fan and left it running all night.

Breakfast:
Only starch/carbohydrates for breakfast (biscuits and gravy, cold cereal, muffins, waffles and syrup, toast). Coffee was good. That's pretty much all I could have. I had to remind housekeeping to stock my in-room coffee maker (good thing I travel with coffee packs ...).

Room Amenities:
There was a safe (thank goodness), a frig, and a microwave.

Solo traveler safety:
When checking in, the female hotel clerk announced my room number aloud, to the assembled locals watching late TV in the breakfast room/lobby, which I did not appreciate. Trying to inform her why this was not a good idea when checking in female guests, her reply was "Why?" I found the door propped open at night once when I went down to access the "business center" - which made me nervous as there was no one at the desk at the time.

Business Center - well, not really. It's a computer, and you cannot print from it. Accessing my boarding passes my last evening/morning ended up being a 2 hour ordeal. The Manager (?owner) finally handed me the keyboard through the bullet-proof glass window, so I could log on to the airlines' site and print from that computer.

Fitness Center - two eliptical machines and a treadmill.

Security:
One female desk clerk on overnight, who would head up to the third floor after her shift with a book. I suspect she lives there.

Final Recommendation:
Avoid this hotel unless you are really limited in what you can spend, and are comfortable in a poorer/urban blight landscape.

I'm not sure why some people rate this hotel so bad. I'm staying there now and it's really a nice hotel.

Yes Downtown is a bit further and the neighboodhood is not a place to walk at night but geez... you can't blame a hotel for not doing research yourself!

We are two females and feel perfectly safe here. We come and go by car and everything is convientantly located too.

The price is very nice, the staff very friendly and yes I would recommand this hotel to a friend!

Because of some paranoid peoples reviews here I was scared upfront to go but those reviews are really untrue and uncalled for in my opinion.

We had planned a two night stay here and could only stomach one night. Broken elevator, unsavory neighborhood and miles from downtown. Do yourself a favor and do not roll the dice on this one. The manager was very nice and issued a prompt refund with little discussion, so I thank him for that.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL- BED BUGS. not only is it in a very bad area of town, surrounded by nothing but industrial dumps and empty buildings, my bed was infested with BED BUGS. My friends and I had booked last minute for Mardi Gras, and ended up at this 'downtown' Days Inn. checked in about 1pm, had HORRIBLE customer service while checking in, the guy could not even run my credit card and tell us the direct phone number to the hotel at the same time. THEN, i am so thankful i thought to grab my own blanket from my car, as soon as i got to room we passed out to take a nap. I awoke about 45 minutes later to seeing something crawling next to my head. then i saw another, and another. I jumped out of bed and caught the bugs in a cup, awoke my friend, and informed the front desk to come immediately. The staff tried to blame us that we brought those bugs in. We then found clusters of BED BUG EGGS on the head board. i am so glad i brought my own blanket (which i left there), i did not sleep under the covers, and i took pictures of what i saw.

i am still terrified that i may have brought home a bug, my bag has all gone straight to the laundry.

Overall, THERE ARE BED BUGS AND HORRIBLE SERVICE. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!

Room Tip: Do not stay here, there are BED BUGS.

O my Gosh!! Was totally not excepting to be in the scary location that it was in! Was sooo glad we came as couples getaway because it was just girls I would NOT have stayed! Was expecting better location being that when I made reservations I was told it was a mile away from Laclede's landing "right downtown" Is what I was told! Of course I guess they wouldnt tell you that you would be a mile away from any feeling of being safe! There is a 6ft iron fence around property and some pretty shady people walking by and on street corners. So not only was there the location issue, we also experienced a housekeeper coming into our room when we were out when there was a do not disturb sign on our door! When we questioned this we were told it was because we took towels off the housekeepers cleaning cart!! So she went in to get them!! After we left!!! We were lucky none of our stuff was messed with or taken but still... I know you will see the point... Upon checking out I asked for a receipt and was told they didnt have one because I booked online! I've been to many other hotels using the website I did to book this room and I've Always gotten a reciept when checking out! We did not eat breakfast there so I cant comment on it, but all I saw at a glance was cereal fruit and juice. In conclusion, I can say the rooms were okay, location is horrible, and staff is totally rude and disrepectful ! Not a good place for family or all girl trip at all!!!! Will never stay there again & will do a lil more research on location for next room I book.

Room Tip: Check out location well before booking!!
