“Not the best Mexican food ever, but almost!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2011

I have visited La Vallesana on several occasions.
I can honestly say, as a Mexican American who has experienced Mexican food since childhood, that the food cooked here is great! The place itself used to be a bit grimy and run down, but the owner has recently renovated the entire building. The actual building is small, as most of the seating is located on a patio which is fenced in (a good thing, given the neighborhood in which this place is located).
The renovations were totally worth it! Not only do you now have good food, but a lovely building!

Okay, so back to the food - I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like it! Aside from their rice and beans (which tend to taste old...), everything else is simply delicious.

Try it at least one! You won't be disappointed.

The only thing I don't like is the service - the waitresses are typically under aged teenage girls that are more interested in who is there. The past few times I ate at the place and didn't get take out, I had to constantly ask for the same thing (such as limes) because anytime the waitress left my table to walk over to the kitchen, she'd invariably stop at someone else's table and chit chat as if she knew them. It is very annoying.
I am not sure why the owner thinks it is a good idea to have 16 year old girls working at such a highly demanding restaurant. SO bad for business. I avoid eating at all costs now.

“Best Mexican / Taqueria in St Louis by a long shot”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2011

First up, the restaurant used to be at the corner of Cherokee and California - that location is undergoing renovation currently; go to its current location a couple storefronts west up Cherokee Street and on the opposite side of the street (south side of the street rather than north). At some point the corner location will reopen and provide lots of great outside seating, but for now the storefront location is where you need to go. Not the perfect ambience, but the food more than makes up for it.

Now that you're in the proper location, I can tell you that the food here can't be beat. Most folks know them best for their tacos, so that’s where I’ll start. First, if you’ve never had any tacos that weren’t the atrocious Americanized version (in a hard corn tortilla shell, with ground beef and lots of sour cream, etc) then you’re in for a learning experience of having a grilled tortilla and filling choices other than what you’d find at taco bell. If you’re a beginner, than the pollo (chicken) or al pastor (BBQ pork with some adobo seasoning and pineapple chunks) are a good way to start. Intermediate level eaters can experiment with barbacoa or carne asada, and advanced eaters might want to jump to more unusual (for gringos) choices like cachete (cheek), lingua (tongue) saudero (tripe), or cabeza (cow head meat). All are tastily topped with onions, cilantro, and other goodies, and best enjoyed with either the salsa verde or roja (green or red sauce) provided along with some radishes for nibbles. Better yet, get several varieties and try them all since the tacos are cheap – I think they’re all $1.75.

If you’re not in the mood for tacos (or are hungry for more than just some tacos), they also have wonderful tortas (sandwiches) and other typical Mexican fare as well. My personal favorite of the tortas is the camarones diabla (spicy shrimp), but I like jamon (ham) and several others as well. One bit of advice, we once got the Cubano Torta expecting it to be like a cuban sandwich (roasted pork, swiss, pickles, etc) and it was nothing at all like that. It had eggs and other odd ingredients; and my wife (who loves Mexican food) not only didn’t finish it, but made her feel a bit queasy afterwards – of course, your results may vary. Also, you might want to consider some of the alternatives on the menu, such as menudo or pozole if they’re in stock. To wash it all down you should try the aguas frescas (drinks), of which the horchata (rice-cinnamon milk treat), tamarindo (tamarind punch) and jamaica (hybiscus punch) are the most common. Finally, get a paleta (popsicle) for dessert; there are some straightforward ones like watermelon, strawberry, or cantaloupe; but I’d recommend one of the more unusual ones like spicy pineapple, spicy tamarind, or similar.

Buen provecho!
