If you have the opportunity to visit St Louis, I highly recommend the art museum. I did not have enough time to tour the entire museum due to time constraints, I know that I could easily spend hours there. There are 3 levels with a new expansion coming in June 2013. I asked someone there and they said this add-on huge and would allow them to show even more artifacts that they have stored in the back. It it's current state the museum is 3 stories. I barely had enough time to finish the 1st level before I had to leave. They have a gift shop, several restrooms, snack bar, and many docents ready to answer questions. I look forward to continuing my visit next time!

If you like art (and history goes along with it) then you will love this!. Good for families, friends, or even by yourself. You can go at your own pace, take breaks and get a bite to eat there. So much to see that I rarely make it through all the way--have to make several trips a year (I like to go slow and take it all in).

New exhibits periodically. Nice gift shop. Beautiful building.

Parking is free, but hard to get on the weekends. Visit during the week if possible. Located within Forest Park in St. Louis.

This is a good way to spend a couple of hours, and free except for any travelling exhibits that are present. There is a small cafe with sandwiches, chips, and drinks. Elevators and stairs are easy to find to move between the museum's 3 levels.
There is a nice variety of art styles, and is well-organized and easy to find your way through.
Went on a Saturday at noon and it was not very busy or crowded, although the neighboring zoo is not in its busy season now.

We had traveled to St Louis for the weekend and saw that the Barocci exhibt was at the St Louis Art Museum and the pictures shown on the web site interested us. Well the pictures did not do reality justice. His work is unbelieable. The amount of effort he put into the "prep" drawings he did of the heads and even the hands clearly shows in his final work. His depiction of the Last Supper is my favorite. Barocci has Christ in the middle with a clear view of him, the wine and the bread. the Twelve are of course six and six, however they are also three on each side of the table, with all Twelve loooking at Christ, so three on each side you are looking at a portion of their back. With out ruining it for you, there are other characters in the painting that add realizm to the scene that I have not seen in any other depiction.
The rest of the SLAM is also worth an entire day. They are opening a new wing and some new exhibts, we will be returning in 2013.

Do not miss this special collection exhibit. The St. Louis Art Museum always inspires and never fails to leave a lasting impression. Their exhibits are spectacularly well organized and interesting. This one is no exception. Barocci's works are well displayed and the audio narrative is very well done. Price for this exhibit is $10 but the general admission to the museum itself is free as always. Parking can be a problem if the weather is nice as it is close to the zoo.
