The museum offers a wide variety of art and sits atop a hill with a fantastic view of the Forest Park area (former World's Fair setting). We liked strolling through the exhibits which are very diverse from classics to ultra modern.

The Art Museum is undergoing a major expansion, and as a result it feels quite maze-like with closed corridors and temporary spaces. But to its credit, there is still a lot of first rate art on display, with reasonable strengths in European and American art, but also world-class holdings in the basement for ethnographic material from Oceania, Mayan antiquities and furniture.

When the full building opens, this will be a cultural destination in its own right. For the moment, well worth visiting if you are in St Louis.

Not the Frick or the Guggenheim, and an embarrassment in Native American and African art, but some solid pieces in American and European. Definitely worth an hour, but the tours are of varying quality. Best to self pace.

I have been to this museum several times; on Fridays, by the way, the exhibitions are ALL free. The museum is a little difficult to figure out, especially with the renovation going on, but you can just wander around. The gift shops are a MUST. I inevitably buy something there. With the free admission and free parking, this is an attraction that can be done frequently and you can drop in to just see one section.
