Powell Hall is the home of the SLSO, and it is a wonderful place to experience beautiful music. I could sit in those red velvet seats all night long.

“A Real Treat”

What a fun night. Went to the beautiful Powell Symphony Hall to hear the St Louis Symphony Orchestra play the music of the band Queen. Was a fabulous time. Could not have asked for a better performance. Hope to see more shows like this. Seats were great in the balcony. What an awesome venue.

“Excellent and Beautiful Symphony Hall”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

Powell Hall used to be called the St. Louis Theater where they showed movies. The Symphony purchased the theater many years after it closed and did a complete renovation. The acoustics of the place are outstanding and perfect for a symphony performance. Some people claim that sitting in the front parts of the balcony is where the sound it best and where the viewing of the orchestra is best. However, I prefer to sit on the floor level but not close to the front. When you sit in any of the first 10 rows, it is difficult if not impossible to see all of the orchestra during a performance. However, if you sit in rows 10 to 15, you can see the solo performers much better than sitting in the balcony. You can see their fingering on the violins and the piano much better and the sound is still excellent.
Powell Hall's lobby is also very beautiful with large crystal chandeliers, cream-colored walls and red velvet on the stair railings and in the carpeting. It is a stunning and beautiful lobby. There is a bar in the lobby area and one in an alcove on the second (balcony) level. Sometimes it is hard to get served during intermission and you feel a bit rushed with your drink before the second half of the performance begins.
They St. Louis Symphony is a world-class symphony orchestra with many recordings, great conductors and wonderful performers. They have improved their music selections for their performances in the past few years and they appeal to a much larger group of people.
Sometimes before the performances, the conductor, the soloist or one of the orchestra members will give a talk about that night's music selections giving extra insight and enabling a greater appreciation of the evening's performance.
Attending a performance of the St. Louis Symphony is always special and a great date with your lover spouse or any special person in your life. It does make it more fun to be able to share the experience and discuss it after the performance.

“Great music in a beautiful environment”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2013

We subscribe to the SLSO, so we are here several times throughout the year. Outside the building is fairly nondescript, however the interior is fabulous. So many lovely architectural features, not to mention the amazing acoustics in the hall. There really isn't a bad seat in the house as far as the sound, and they have a great variety of shows throughout the season. Must do in STL.
