This is the ONLY place to go for breakfast in St. Louis. It's in a shady neighborhood, but it's worth the long drive from downtown. The burgers and the breakast potatos are my favorites

“We came for the Chili and guess what we found...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2007

It comes from a frozen block purchased from Edmond's (frozen food company). *sigh* I read an article in Gourmet magazine and Goody Goody chili was included in the 10 best in America list, but alas, it is a salty, meaty, mediocre bowl of uniformity and gloppiness. I'm sure it's great on hot dogs and in their famous Wilbur omelet, but it's not so great on its own. What was Gourmet thinking???

On a positive note, the diner, opened in 1948, is the real-deal American diner both in menu and decor. The cook was wandering around the dining room (we arrived for lunch right before closing at 2:00pm) and he came over to ask us how everything was. Our waitress was very friendly and chatty (which I love at diners) and my companion's cheeseburger came wrapped in wax paper and was quite tasty (although thin and a bit overdone).

Come for the history, the breakfasts, and the cheeseburgers, but think twice about ordering a bowl of chili.
